Best And Brightest Of Aztec Athletics To Be Honored Wednesday Night April 8, 2003 SAN DIEGO - Over 140 San Diego State student-athletes will be recognized Wednesday night at the ninth annual Scholar-Athlete banquet, to be held at The Wyndam, San Diego - Emerald Plaza. To be recognized, student-athletes much achieve a grade-point average of at least 3.2. In addition, the women's tennis and cross country teams and the men's soccer and tennis teams will be recognized for the highest team grade-point averages. An all-time high of 13 student-athletes will be honored as Malik Award winners for a perfect 4.0 grade-point average. Featured student speakers are baseball player Rielly Embrey and women's tennis player Katja Karrento. Embrey has won the Malik Award four times and Karrento is a five-time winner. "The traditional Scholar-Athlete Banquet has become a very special night," said Rick Bay, SDSU's executive director of athletics and special assistant to the president. "With the time demands placed on student-athletes today, academic excellence comes at a very high price. The students we will honor Wednesday are truly exceptional people." Mark Gumble, assistant athletic director for academics, says that many are deserving of praise. "We are proud of our academic support unit but we realize that it is up to the student-athletes to fully achieve academic success," Gumble said. "I think it is also a tribute to our head coaches, who bring quality individuals into the athletic department."
