Aztecs Annouce Second Annual 'Book The Q' For Literacy

SAN DIEGO - San Diego State Director of Athletics Rick Bay announced that the second annual "Book the Q" for Literacy, presented by the San Diego Union-Tribune, will take place Saturday, November 6 at Qualcomm Stadium. That evening, the San Diego State football team plays host to Brigham Young. Fans are encouraged to bring new or slightly used books prior to the game for distribution to public schools in the San Diego County area. All high school students will get free admission to the SDSU-Cougar game with their student I.D. card and are encouraged to bring books. In addition, those who donate books on game day will receive an Aztec display sticker that also entitles the fan to obtain two tickets to any SDSU non-conference men's or women's basketball game in the 1999-2000 season.

The event has received corporate support from Cox Communications, WalMart and KFMB/Star 100.7. Discount coupons for tickets to the San Diego State-BYU game will be available at nine WalMart stores throughout San Diego County starting in October. Prior to the game, books suitable for kindergarten through 12th grade readers may be donated for distribution at WalMart, the Aztec Store & More in Fashion Valley and the campus Store at SDSU.

"This is an event that makes a lot of sense for San Diego State University to be involved in," said Bay. "There is a definite need in the county to supplement the inventory in our public schools and, as an educational institution, we are privileged to provide an avenue to help address that need."

Benefiting from the book drive are San Diego County public schools as well as the San Diego Council on Literacy. Last year, the Aztecs collected more than 12,000 books for San Diego area youth through the Book the "Q" campaign.
