SAN FRANCISCO -- San Diego State's Mila Chaves (Asuncion, Paraguay) fired a 2-under-par 70 on Tuesday to lead the Aztec women's golf team during the second round of the NCAA San Francisco Regional at TPC Harding Park Golf Course. With her score, the SDSU senior carded the squad's lone red figure of the day, jumping into a seven-way tie for fourth place individually at 3-under 141 heading into Wednesday's final round on the par-72, 6,369-yard track.

As a team, SDSU slipped four places in the standings into the 11th spot at 7-over 583 after logging a second-round 294. Despite the stumble, the Aztecs remain just three shots in back of the cutoff line for sixth place currently occupied by Oklahoma State (+4), while Louisville (+5) and North Carolina (+5) are tied for seventh, followed by Pepperdine (+6) and Colorado (+6), which are tied for ninth.

Incredibly, just eight strokes separate the top 11 schools in the 18-team field, with Kent State (-2) and Stanford (-2) sharing the second-round lead, followed closely by UCLA (-1). The top six teams and three low individuals not on those squads advance out of regional competition into the NCAA championship series, set for May 18-23, in Stillwater, Okla.

The reigning Mountain West individual champion, Chaves shook off a bogey on the first green with five birdies over a nine-hole stretch through the turn, capped by a successful drain on the par-4, 380-yard No. 13, which ranks as the second-toughest hole of the week thus far. Despite consecutive bogeys at No. 15 and No. 16, Chaves still managed to climb six places on the leaderboard, where Hira Naveed of Pepperdine (-5) vaulted into the top spot after shooting a second-round 67, while the Stanford's Andrea Lee (-4) and Emily Wang (-4) are tied for second.

In addition, Haleigh Krause (Eugene, Ore.) finds herself four shots behind Chaves in a tie for 24th at 1-over 145 after posting a 74 on Tuesday. The Aztec senior notched a birdie of her own on the 13th green to go with another drain at the par-3, 165-yard No. 17, but two bogeys on either side of the turn proved too much to overcome.

Elsewhere, fellow classmate Georgia Lacey (Del Mar, Calif.) occupies the 43rd spot at 4-over 148 after shooting a second-round 76. The Torrey Pines High alumna recorded 12 pars to go with a birdie at No. 17, but it wasn't enough to ease the sting of five bogeys.

Rounding out the SDSU delegation were freshmen Gioia Carpinelli (Boppelsen, Switzerland) and Sara Kjellker (Hollviken, Sweden), who both ended the day in a tie for 72nd at 8-over 152.

Carpinelli matched Krause with a 74, highlighted by birdies on the first and fourth greens, while Kjellker registered a team-high 13 pars before settling for a 77.

The NCAA San Francisco Regional concludes on Wednesday when San Diego State tees off with Pepperdine and South Carolina, starting at 8:05 a.m. PT on hole No. 10.
