SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State Track & Field team heads to the Mountain West Outdoor Championships this week. The meet is hosted by Fresno State and will be held at Veteran's Memorial Stadium in Clovis, Calif. The Aztecs, who won the Outdoor Championship last year, will be going for their fourth title in the past six years.
The Aztecs will send 24 athletes to championships and will look to add to the nine athletes who currently would qualify for the NCAA West Regionals in Sacramento May 24-26.
Asia Smith kicks off the championship for the Aztecs, competing in the heptathlon Wednesday (100m hurdles, high jump, shot put, 200m) and Thursday (long jump, javelin, 800m). She finished eighth in the heptathlon at the Bryan Clay Invite on April 20th and had a season-best time of 14.54 in the 100 meter hurdles two weeks ago.
On Friday, there will be finals for the shot put, long jump and high jump. Lisa-Anne Barrow enters the meet with a conference-best leap of 20' 9.25". Also on Friday are the prelims for all track events.
The top eight from the prelims will competing in the finals on Saturday. Senior Ashley Henderson looks to defend her title in the 100 and 200 meter dashes, as well as the 4x100 relay, which the Aztecs have won the past two years. Henderson, who has a program record 11 conference championships, will be going for her fifth straight Outstanding Performer of the Meet Award.

Need to Know
-Ashley Henderson's time of 10.98 in the 100 meter dash two weeks ago set a school and facility record (Roy P. Drachman Track & Field Stadium), but more impressively, she now holds the title of fastest woman on the planet in 2018. The three NCAA times better than her this season have all been wind-aided. Henderson earned her fourth career Mountain West Track Athlete of the Week award for her performance; the fourth consecutive weekly honor for the Aztecs.
-Lisa-Anne Barrow set a new PR in the 400 meter dash two weeks ago. Her time of 52.71 is the third best time in school history and tops in the Mountain West this season. Tyra Lea (54.06), Jalyn Harris (54.36) and Lakin Hatcher (54.89) also set new PRs in the 400.
-Cassidy Towner's time of 4:32.74 in the 1,500 meter run is the ninth best time in program history. She became the first Aztec to crack the top ten in over a decade.
-Three current Aztecs (Ashley Henderson (10.98), Simone Glenn (11.51) and Rochene Smith (11.50)) all are in the top ten all-time at SDSU for the 100 meter dash. That trio along with freshman Jalyn Harris ran the second fastest 4x100 relay (43.46) in school history two weeks ago.
-For the second weekend in a row, freshman Callista Fletcher set new collegiate bests in the 100 (11.69) and 200 meter dashes. (23.84).
-Ashley Henderson now has the school record in the 100 meter dash for freshmen (11.64), sophomores (11.21), juniors (11.01) and seniors (10.98).
-Ashley Henderson and Lisa-Anne Barrow have the top mark in the Mountain West in two events a piece. Henderson has the fastest time in the 100m (10.98) and 200m (23.13) and Barrow has the best time in the 400m (52.71) and long jump (20' 9.25"). The Aztecs also have the fastest time in the 4x100 (43.46) and 4x400 (3:34.11) relays.
Lisa-Anne Barrow Named SD Hall of Champions Star of the Month
Lisa-Anne Barrow was named Star of the Month for April by the San Diego Hall of Champions. Barrow had four marks/times that cracked the top ten in the SDSU record books in the month.
Barrow's April achievements:
-Cleared 20' 9.25" in long jump (No. 2 all-time at SDSU)
-Ran the 400 meter dash in 52.71 (No. 3 all-time at SDSU)
-Helped Aztecs run the 4x400 relay in 3:34.11 (No. 3 all-time at SDSU)
-Helped Aztecs run the 4x100 relay in 44.54 (No. 8 all-time at SDSU)
-Named Mountain West Field Athlete of the Week (April 10)
Five Aztecs Receive Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports-Scholar Award
Five members of the San Diego State Track & Field Team received the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports-Scholar Award. Je'Neal Ainsworth (3.32; criminal justice), Lakin Hatcher (3.22; biology), Tyra Lea (3.53; kinesiology), Monique McPherson (3.21; public administration) and Jasmine Young (3.40; political science) received the award, which is given to students of color who exhibit academic excellence and community activism.
To receive this award, student-athletes have to compete in an intercollegiate sport; maintain a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.20; and be active on their campuses or in their communities.
