SAN DIEGO - San Diego State freshman Emily Bennett was named to the 2018 Golden Coast Conference All-Tournament Team. The utility is the second freshman in school history to earn a spot on the squad, joining Caroline Israels, who accomplished the feat in 2014.
Hailing from Oakdale, Bennett helped the Aztecs to a third-place finish at the annual league tournament. In three games, the freshman tallied eight goals, one assist, 10 steals and four field blocks, while drawing 17 ejections, which was half of SDSU's tournament total.
In the opening game of the GCC Championship, Bennett led the Aztecs with three goals, three steals and three field blocks in the victory over California Baptist. She had nine of SDSU's 12 drawn ejections, logging the most in a single game since Erinn Greenwood drew 12 at California on March 14, 2009.
A day later vs. LMU in the GCC semifinals, Bennett scored a team-high-tying two goals to go with an SDSU-best two steals and six more drawn ejections. She was responsible for nearly half of the Aztecs' ejections drawn total (6 of 13).
Bennett wrapped up her weekend in the City of Angels with another strong outing, this time vs. Azusa Pacific in the third-place game. The freshman scored SDSU's first two goals and assisted on the third, to help the Aztecs build a comfortable lead en route to victory. Bennett finished with three goals, one assist, five steals and two drawn ejections.
The utility joins an impressive list of Aztecs who have been named to the GCC all-tourney team. Bennett is now a part of a group that includes Alyssa Diacono (twice), Anique Hermann, Israels (three times), Rachel Mitchell (twice) and Tayla Walsh.
