INDIANAPOLIS -- San Diego State received word of its postseason destination on Thursday when the NCAA Division I Women's Golf Committee revealed the Aztecs will compete in the NCAA San Francisco Regional, May 7-9, in San Francisco, Calif.
SDSU garnered the No. 12 seed for its fifth consecutive regional berth, its eighth in nine years and 15th overall since the regional format was adopted in 1993.
The Aztecs, who earned an at-large bid after finishing second at the Mountain West Championship on April 18, will be joined on the par-72, 6,369-yard TPC Harding Park Golf Course in order of seed by UCLA, Stanford, South Carolina, Kent State, Oklahoma State, North Carolina, Colorado, Louisville, North Carolina State, Ole Miss, California, Pepperdine, Oregon, Long Beach State, Grand Canyon, Princeton and Farleigh Dickinson.
The field also includes six individuals who will compete for the right to advance to the NCAA Championships, featuring a trio of Mountain West competitors in New Mexico's Ingrid Gutierrez and Darian Zachek, along with San José State's Abegail Arevalo, who will join Washington State's Alivia Brown and the UC Davis duo of Samantha Hutchison and Christine Danielsson.
In addition to SDSU, the MW's other regional slot was taken by three-time defending conference champion UNLV, which will participate as the league's automatic qualifier in the Tallahassee Regional at Don Veller Golf Club in Tallahassee, Fla. Meanwhile, the two remaining regional championships will be contested at University Ridge Golf Course in Madison, Wis., and the University of Texas Golf Club and Academy in Austin, Texas.
The Aztecs will play 18 holes each of the three days, following a practice round on Sunday, May 6. The top six squads and three lowest individuals not on those teams from each regional will advance to the NCAA Championships, scheduled for May 18-23, at Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Okla.
This year marks San Diego State's 11th trip to regional competition as a team and represents the 15th time the program has sent at least one golfer to the regional round since the format was established in 1993.
The Aztecs ended a six-year absence from the NCAAs in 2010, when the squad finished 13th at the Central Regional in Columbus, Ind. SDSU also posted a 17th-place showing at the 2011 West Regional in Auburn, Wash., followed by a tie for 20th at the 2012 East Regional in State College, Pa.
The Aztecs missed out on a team berth in 2013, but qualified three individuals, Paige Spiranac, Christine Wong, Emma Henrikson, to the Central Regional in Norman, Okla. In 2014, the Aztecs received an at-large bid as a team once again, tying for the 21st position in the West Regional at Suncadia Resort's Tumble Creek course in Cle Elum, Wash.
In 2015, San Diego State landed in the 11th spot at the Entrada at Snow Canyon Resort in St. George, Utah, before finishing 12th at Stanford Golf Course in 2015.
Last year, the Scarlet and Black matched its highest finish in a regional meet with an 11th-place performance at the Rawls Course in Lubbock, Texas.
The Aztecs, who are seeking for their first-ever national championship appearance as a team, are currently ranked 41st nationally by Golfweek and 46th by Golfstat.
