SAN DIEGO -
San Diego State Heads to League-Leading Fresno State for Weekend Series
Winners of a combined five of the last six Mountain West regular-season titles, the San Diego State softball team and Fresno State will play a three-game series this weekend in Fresno, Calif. The Aztecs (13-26, 4-8 MW), who won the 2012, 2013 and 2014 MW titles and have a league-record seven regular-season championships overall, and first-place Bulldogs (27-15, 10-2 MW), winners of the 2015 and 2016 titles, will play at 6 p.m. PT Friday, 3 p.m. PT Saturday and noon PT Sunday.
All three games will be webcast live on the Mountain West Network and will have live stats on GoAztecs.com.
The Aztecs are coming off a tough 2-1 series loss with Nevada last weekend as SDSU led late in all three games.
San Diego State has been streaky this season. The Aztecs opened their season 1-8, then won seven of nine games (7-2) with a pair of victories over nationally ranked teams. Since the 6-2 win over then No. 21/20 Minnesota on March 2, however, the Aztecs have gone 5-16.
Out of SDSU's 26 losses on the season, 18 have been by three or less runs, including six in extra innings, four with the international tiebreaker rule in effect, seven by one score, six by two runs and five by three scores.
Heading into the weekend, Katie Byrd leads San Diego State in multiple offensive categories, including batting average (.309), hits (38), doubles (8), total bases (48), slugging percentage (.390) and on-base percentage (.368). Kelsey Munoz has missed 23 games with a hand injury, but is still batting .294, while Aris Metcalfe is perfect in 11 stolen base attempts.
Marissa Moreno and Alex Formby are each tied for the league lead with 33 appearances, while Moreno's 29 games started are seven more than No. 2 in the league. Formby is 8-10 with a 2.69 ERA over 109 1/3 innings, limiting the opposition to a .221 average, while Moreno is 3-14 with a 3.66 ERA in 111 innings.
