SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State rowing team raced in three events on Saturday at the 45th annual San Diego Crew Classic at Crown Point Shores on Mission Bay, finishing first in its heat for the varsity eight Cal Cup and fourth in both the second varsity eight Hungness Trophy heat race and varsity four ‘A' Plumleigh Cortney Cup heat.

The Aztecs started the regatta in heat one of the V8 Cal Cup race at 8:40 a.m., competing against Loyola Marymount, University of Victoria, University of Portland and Saint Mary's. SDSU got out ahead of the pack early in the race and maintained its lead to finish in almost open water in 7:07.637 and were followed by LMU (7:12.840), Univ. of Victoria (7:17.673), Univ. of Portland (7:20.446) and St. Mary's (7:28.140). The Aztecs finished with the best time of both Cal Cup heats, as the next fastest time for the women's V8 was logged by Sacramento State in heat two (7:08.199).

With their first place finish in Saturday's race, SDSU is set to race in position No. 1 for Sunday's final event at 10 a.m. In the final, the Aztecs will face Sac State, Southern Methodist, Loyola Marymount, Kansas State and Univ. of Victoria.

In the 10:24 a.m. 2V8 heat race for the Jackie Ann Stitt Hungness Trophy, the Aztecs were unable to make solid headway and managed a fourth-place time of 7:08.633, behind California (6:38.736), Oklahoma (6:57.628) and Gonzaga (7:05.415), but finished ahead of USD (7:16.457) and Univ. of Portland (7:22.368).

The Aztec 2V8 boat's fourth place heat finish earned the crew a spot in Sunday's Hungness Trophy petite final, scheduled for 9:36 a.m. In that final, SDSU will race in the fifth position against Univ. of Victoria, Tennessee, Gonzaga, Sac State and K-State.

SDSU's final event on Saturday was the V4 ‘A' boat's heat for the Karen Plumleigh Cortney Cup. The Aztecs raced in the Duke Robinson shell in the third heat event and found themselves finishing in fourth in 7:51.599, behind Washington State (7:36.967), USC (7:38.724) and Gonzaga (7:44.566). SDSU finished nearly 30 seconds ahead of UCSB (8:28.089) and almost a minute before St. Mary's (8:43.605).

The V4 ‘A' boat's fourth place finish earns the team a fourth position start in the Cortney Cup petite final, scheduled for Sunday at 8:16 a.m. The Aztecs will face off against Tennessee, Gonzaga, K-State, SMU and Sac State in the event.

UP NEXT
Aside from the three final races it earned through today's contests, SDSU will enter a V4 ‘B' final only draw at 11:40 a.m. against USC, UCLA, OU, Gonzaga and K-State. The Aztec 3V8 is also set to compete in a final only event, the women's open Carley Copley Cup grand final, at 2:08 p.m. against Cal, Stanford, Univ. of Tennessee, K-State, UCSD and UCSB.
