PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico ââ'¬" San Diego State women's golfer Gioia Carpinelli finds herself in second place at the Hawkeye-El Tigre Invitational after firing a 5-under-par 139 on Friday during the first two rounds at El Tigre Golf and Country Club.
With her total, the Aztec freshman remains two shots behind front-runner Bianca Pagdanganan of Arizona (-7), heading into Saturday's final round on the par-72, 6,085-yard course layout. Carpinelli shared the team lead with nine birdies on the day, finishing with cards of 69-70.
Collectively, SDSU occupies the third position after posting a 15-over 591. As a result, the Scarlet and Black trails first-place Arizona (-6) by 18 strokes, while Washington (+12) resides in the second spot, followed by the Aztecs, Wisconsin and New Mexico, both of which are tied for fourth at 18-over.
Mila Chaves (Asuncion, Paraguay) is the only other SDSU player among the top 20 after 36 holes. The Aztec senior remains in a four-way tie for 12th at 2-over 146 on rounds of 74-72. Chaves sank nine birdies of her own, including a six in the second round. However, four bogeys and a double on her first hole at the par-3 No. 6 prevented a loftier perch.
The SDSU starting lineup also includes freshman Sara Kjellker, who sits in a tie for 32nd at 7-over 151, followed by seniors Georgia Lacey (T-48, +11) and Haleigh Krause (T-66th, +14).
In addition, the Aztecs have one golfer competing as an individual this week in sophomore Fernanda Escauriza, who is tied for 12th as well after posting rounds of 69-77.
The Hawkeye-El Tigre Invitational concludes on Saturday when SDSU tees off alongside Arizona and Washington for the final round, starting at 12:09 p.m. CT/10:09 a.m. PT on hole No. 1.
