SAN DIEGO -- San Diego State had it three-game winning streak snapped Saturday after dropping a 19-8 decision to No. 4 Boston College on a rain-soaked afternoon at Aztec Lacrosse Field.
With the loss, SDSU fell for the first time in five home games, slipping to 5-3 overall, while the Eagles remain unbeaten on the year at 9-0.
Kirstie Greenlaw netted her third career hat trick for the Aztecs, while Morgan Taylor added two strikes of her own, but it wasn't enough as BC built a commanding 7-1 lead by the 8:22 mark of the first half, forcing the Scarlet and Black to play catch-up the rest of the way.
After Greenlaw and Taylor found the back of the cage four-and-one-half minutes apart, the Eagles received goals by Tess Chandler and Sam Apuzzo in the final 26 seconds to give the contest its 9-3 tally at intermission.
SDSU managed to cut the deficit to five on two occasions in the second half, including an 11-6 spread following Natalie Peel's goal with just under 15 minutes remaining. However, BC responded with an 8-3 run to close out the game and keep the Scarlet and Black at bay.
The Aztecs were undone by 20 turnovers, including 11 in the second half, while the Eagles maintained a 32-17 advantage in shots on goal. In addition, BC held the statistical edge in ground balls (24-15) and draw controls (16-12).
SDSU was also unable to contain the exploits of Apuzzo, who entered the weekend as the nation's top scorer and led all players with six goals and six draw controls on Saturday. Elsewhere, Dempsey Arsenault contributed three markers of her own to go with a personal-best seven ground balls for the Eagles, while Emma Schurr finished with four points on two goals and two assists.
OF NOTE
- Aztec goalkeeper Katy Sharretts recorded her fourth game of the year with double-digit saves after making 13 stops vs. BC.
- Sarah McDonagh collected a career-high three ground balls, while Mackenzie Lech and Julia Sheehan had two apiece.
- Jill Haight led SDSU with four draw controls to go with one caused turnover.
- The Aztecs are 0-3 on the year when trailing at the half and 0-2 when earning fewer draw controls than the opposition.
QUOTABLE
"I'm very proud of how our team fought today," said SDSU head coach Kylee White. "Although the score looks lopsided, it wasn't necessarily indicative of how close it was for much of the game. Boston College is a great team, and they have some excellent players, but I think turnovers hurt us in the second half. Those are things that we will have to get better at in practice, so it's on us coaches to create those learning situations this week."
