IRVINE, Calif. - No. 14 San Diego State got behind early and was unable to rally in a 13-4 loss to fifth-ranked Hawai'i at the Barbara Kalbus Invitational Friday afternoon at Anteater Aquatics Center. The defeat sends SDSU to 5-5 on the year, while the Rainbow Wahine moved to 9-1.
UH scored the first four goals of the game, including three in the first quarter, before the Aztecs were able to make a dent in their deficit. Shelby Kraft supplied SDSU's first goal of the day, but Hawai'i answered with three additional goals to carry a 7-1 lead into halftime.
The third quarter was evenly played as both teams scored twice. Golden Coast Player of the Week Emily Bennett provided both of San Diego State's goals and Maddy Parenteau added the final Aztec goal in the fourth quarter. UH, meanwhile, dented the scoreboard four times in the final frame to give the game its final margin.
STAT OF THE GAME
Maura Cantoni equaled her career high with 13 saves. She also made 13 stops vs. UC Santa Barbara.
NOTE
Emily Bennett posted her team-leading seventh multiple-goal effort of the season. She has led the team in scoring six times, including three straight.
UP NEXT
San Diego State will face No 17 UC Santa Barbara on Saturday morning at 9:15 a.m. PT. The game will be at Corona del Mar High School in Newport Beach. SDSU defeated the Gauchos earlier this season, 7-4, at the Triton Invitational on Feb. 10.
