SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's tennis team looks to bounce back following last weekend's pair of losses vs. BYU and USD when it hosts USC and Cal Poly this weekend. The Aztecs welcome the Trojans at 2 p.m. on Friday, while Saturday's match against the Mustangs is set for 11 a.m. at the Aztec Tennis Center.
The Trojans currently hold three spots in Oracle/ITA rankings with No. 23 Gabby Smith and No. 102 Madison Westby in singles, as well as No. 26 duo Angela Kulikov and Rianna Valdes. USC, currently 3-2 on the season, clinched 4-0 vs. Oklahoma in a neutral site match on Jan. 27 and have since enjoyed nearly three weeks off from dual match play. This season, the Trojans also own wins over USD and LMU, and experienced losses at Clemson and against UCSB.
Cal Poly started its season with a loss at LMU, followed by two home wins vs. Nevada and University of San Francisco. The Mustangs dropped their two most recent matches, at Fresno State (6-1) and at CSUN (5-2) to fall to 2-3 on the season.
Last season, The Aztecs faced then 22nd-ranked USC in Los Angeles, dropping the match 7-0, but bounced back the following weekend to claim a 4-3 win at home over the Mustangs.
This weekend's matches mark the last of a six-match home stand for the Aztecs, which began with wins over UC Davis (4-3) and Point Loma (5-2). Last weekend, the Aztecs had two straight days of fierce competition against BYU (L, 5-2) and USD (L, 4-2). Senior Paola Diaz currently holds a team best three-match win streak in singles, while doubles duos Jenny Moinard and Mia Smith, as well as Nnena Nadozie and Magda Aubets, have both won their last four doubles matches.
Following this weekend's duals, SDSU travels to Honolulu, Hawai'i for a neutral site match vs. Grand Canyon on Feb. 24, and visits Hawai'i on Feb. 25.
