SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The San Diego State swimming and diving team stands in second place after the second day of the Mountain West Championships at the Palo Alto Aquatic Center. The Aztecs currently have 451.5 total points after Thursday's events, trailing MW championship leader Boise State (491 points) by 39.5 points.
Senior Frida Berggren posted the biggest bright spot for the Aztecs on Day 2, winning the individual title in the 200 IM with a career-best 1:59.28. The time also stands as third best in program history.
The Aztecs had at least one finish in the top three of all four swimming events on Thursday, including a second-place time by McKenna Meyer in the 500 free, who clocked in at 4:44.71 - the fastest time of her career and the second fastest in Aztec history.
Klara Thormalm also broke into the Aztec record book, posting the sixth fastest 50 free time in SDSU history at 22.80. Thormalm finished third in the race, clocking in just .01 second behind second-place finisher Isobel Ryan of Wyoming, and just .27 seconds behind top-finisher Abbey Sorensen of Boise State.
The Aztec 200 free relay team of Klara Thormalm, Alma Thormalm, Peyton Wilson and Summer Harrison collectively posted a second-place finish at 1:30.57 - the fastest time for SDSU this season.
On the diving board, the Aztecs were led by Alexandra Caplan, who finished fifth in 3-meter competition with a score of 306.06. Nicole Dutton also posted a top-10 finish, scoring at 274.92 to place seventh.
The Aztecs look to close the first-place gap tomorrow on Day 3 of the event with the 400 medley relay, the 400 IM, the 100 fly, the 200 free, the 100 breast, and the 100 back taking place tomorrow.
