SAN DIEGO -

No. 25/25 Kentucky 5, SDSU 0 | Updated Tourney Schedule

The San Diego State softball team allowed four unearned runs in the top of the fourth inning and never recovered in a 5-0 loss to No. 25/25 Kentucky in the first game of the 28th annual Campbell/Cartier Classic Thursday night at SDSU Softball Stadium. The Aztecs (1-7) have now lost five straight games.

After a scoreless three innings, the Wildcats (2-2) got going in the top of the fourth when Katie Reed singled and stole second, and Jenny Shaper was hit by a pitch. It appeared SDSU starting pitcher Marissa Moreno would get out of the jam when she got Abbey Cheek to flyout to center field and struck out Alex Martens looking. Rachael Metzger, however, drew a pinch-hit walk to load the bases and Brooklin Hinz reached on a San Diego State fielding error, which allowed Reed to score the first run of the game. Lauren Johnson followed with a pinch-hit two-run single and later in the inning Hinz scored on a single by Bailey Vick.

UK tacked on another run in the sixth as Erin Rethlake's single up the middle plated Johnson.

The Aztecs has plenty of chances to score, but left the bases loaded in the first inning, and runners in scoring position in the fourth, sixth and seventh. Altogether, SDSU was 0-for-7 (.000) with runners in scoring position and 1-for-14 (.071) with runners on base.

Taylor Stewart double and walked in the game, while Zaria Meshack and Molly Sturdivant also reached base safely twice via single and a walk.

Moreno (0-2) took the loss after allowing four runs (all unearned) on six hits, two walks and a hit batter over four innings, while striking out one. Alex Formby relieved Moreno in the fifth and surrendered one run on five hits and a hit batter. She struck out two.

THE NOTE

THE NOTE II
Alex Formby allowed an earned run in the sixth inning, her first earned allowed since the opener against No. 25/25 Georgia on Feb. 8. Formby had gone 18 1/3 innings in between without allowing an earned run.
