SAN DIEGO - Coming off their first dual victory of the season, the San Diego State women's tennis team is set to host two matches this weekend against a pair of Southern California opponents. The Aztecs will face the UCSD Tritons Saturday at noon, followed by UC Irvine at noon on Sunday. Both matches will be played at the Aztec Tennis Center.
SDSU opened its 2017 season against UCSD, edging the Tritons 4-3 by owning the doubles point and three singles victories, two of which belonged to now-seniors Jana Buth and Paula Diaz, to bring the series total against the Tritons to 6-0. UCSD began its spring slate with an exhibition match against Cal State Fullerton last weekend, dropping the 7-0 decision. Though this weekend's dual counts towards the Aztecs' official season record, UCSD considers the match an exhibition because of their Division II classification.
The Aztecs also took down the Anteaters 4-3 in their last meeting during the 2017 season. UCI begins regular season play this Saturday at home against Grand Canyon University before it makes the trip to America's Finest City. The Aztecs last faced off against the Anteaters in October at the 2017 ITA Southwest Regionals, where junior Jenny Moinard and sophomore Mia Smith downed UCI's Flora Amiri and Yulin Chen, 8-1, in the doubles round of 64, and Diaz defeated Gillian Parker, 6-4, 6-3, in consolation singles play.
SDSU enters the weekend 1-0 after recording a 6-1 victory over UC Riverside last weekend. The Aztecs were led by senior duo Buth and Diaz, as well as Smith and Moinard in doubles action against the Highlanders, and the team logged singles points with wins from Buth, Diaz, Moinard, junior Magda Aubets and freshman Nnena Nadozie.
Results from Saturday and Sunday's duals will be available once the contests end on www.GoAztecs.com. Following the pair of matches this weekend, the Aztecs are set to travel to Berkeley, Calif., to take on the No. 11 Golden Bears on Thursday, Feb. 1.
