SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State swimming and diving team defeated San Diego, 151-131, in a dual meet at the Aztec Aquaplex on Friday to conclude the regular season. The Aztecs finish the 2017-18 dual meet schedule with an 11-1 record and now look towards the 2018 Mountain West Championships on Feb. 14-16 in San Antonio, Texas.
SDSU kicked off its afternoon grabbing the first two spots in the 200 medley relay. Alma Thormalm, Caitlin Delany, Courtney Vincent and Klara Thormalm combined for a first-place time of 1:43.72, while Alexa Clayfield, Morganne McKennan, Summer Harrison, and Peyton Wilson teamed up for a second-place finish at 1:45.55.
After USD took first-place in the 1000 free, the Aztecs would go on to grab first place in each of the six events. Frida Berggren posted a 1:52.81 in the 200 free, while Elli Ferrin collected first-place in the 100 back with a time of 57.68. Delany's 1:04.46 in the 100 breast was good for first place in the 100 breast as the Aztecs grabbed each of the top four spots in that event.
The Aztecs grabbed each of the top three spots in both the 200 fly and 50 free, led by Vincent's 2:04.87 in the 200 fly and Klara Thormalm's 23.50 in the 50 free.
On the diving board, Alexandra Caplan brought home top honors in both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards. Caplan posted a new season-best with a 352.65 in the 3-meter - just a shade below her school record of 359.65 set last season. All six of the diving scores in 3-meter action set new season-bests for the Aztecs, including Nicole Dutton's 325.20, which set a new career-best and is good for third-best in program history. Delaney Gallagher and Marie Yacopino also broke into the program's top-10 record book, with Gallagher using a 298.50 (eighth best in program history) and Yacopino posting a 297.45 (ninth best).
Yacopino also posted a new career-best and the fifth-best score in Aztec history on the 1-meter board with a score of 295.05.
McKenna Meyer recorded a season-best 2:06.32 in the 200 back to grab first place. The Aztecs finished the meet exhibitioning the last six swimming events, leaving the meet with its final score of 151-131.
The Aztecs await the aforementioned Mountain West Championships on Feb. 14-16. The Aztecs are looking for its fourth conference title in the last eight years and have finished in the top three of the event each of the last eight years.
