SAN DIEGO - San Diego State football head coach Rocky Long has announced Doug Deakin, an 11-year member of the Aztec football program, as an assistant coach on Wednesday. Deakin will be the team's special teams coordinator and will also coach the tight ends.
Deakin will hit the field after spending the previous three seasons with SDSU as an assistant for football operations. Previously, Deakin served as an Aztec graduate assistant coach for special teams and defensive staff, earning a master's degree in education leadership in 2014.
Deakin is the third SDSU graduate on the full-time football staff, joining defensive line coach Ernie Lawson and offensive line coach Mike Schmidt.
A walk-on at San Diego State, Deakin played a combined 24 games on special teams over his final two years in 2009-10, also serving as the team's holder on field goals and extra-point attempts. One of three captains selected by his teammates in 2010, Deakin ran 13 yards for a first down off a fake field-goal attempt in an Aztec win over Utah State and also saw action in the 2010 Poinsettia Bowl win over Navy, SDSU's first bowl appearance since 1998 and first bowl victory since 1969.
Deakin was awarded the 2008 SDSU President's Award for Highest Standards of Academic and Athletic Excellence, and garnered academic all-Mountain West accolades in 2009. Deakin was also nominated for the College Football Rudy Awards, which recognizes student-athletes who demonstrate excellent character, contribution and commitment as members of their college football teams.
An Oak Park, Calif., native, Deakin received his undergraduate degree in business management from San Diego State in 2010 before earning his aforementioned master's from the university in 2014.
Deakin is married to the former Emily Diggins.
