San Diego State cross country races against the best teams in the west Friday, competing at the NCAA West Regional on Fri., Nov. 10 at Seattle's Jefferson Park Golf Course. The women's 6K race is set for a 10:30 a.m. (PT) start. Both the men's and women's races will be streamed live on FloTrack.com for a fee and live results will be available with a link on GoAztecs.com.
The 6K course at Jefferson Park Golf Course consists of multiple 2K loops on flat fairways crossing some cart paths. The course was the site of the 2010 Pac-10 Championships, the 2011 USATF Club Nationals and the NCAA West Regionals in 2012 and 2015.
San Diego State faces tough competition, running alongside opponents from six nationally-ranked programs in the USTFCCCA NCAA Division I National Coaches' Poll, including No. 3 Oregon, No. 4 San Francisco, No. 7 Stanford, No. 10 Boise State, No. 16 Washington and No. 26 California. Arizona, UCLA, Arizona State and Loyola Marymount round out the top 10 in the region, according to the USTFCCCA.
The Aztecs leader this year has been senior Lily Seynaeve, who has been the team's top finisher in every race this season. The senior from Corona, Calif., has set PRs in both the 5K (17:37.8 at the Highlander Invitational) and 6K (21:30.0 at the UC Riverside Invitational) this season, finishing 20th or better in four of five meets this season. One of San Diego State's freshmen, Mackenzie Mora, has also been a bright spot. Mora ran SDSU's third-best 5K and 6K times this season and was the San Diego State's second finisher in three meets this year. Aztec freshman Sakura Roberson is expected to make her debut in the Scarlet and Black at the regional meet, as well.
Entered into the race for SDSU are Chrissy Calain, Cindy Flores, Mackenzie Mora, Renee Phillips, Sakura Roberson and Lily Seynaeve.
At the NCAA West Regional last year, San Diego State raced to the second fastest NCAA Regional 6K time in program history with its 22:12.06 average time and earned a 26th-place finish. The Aztecs' finish at Sacramento's Haggin Oaks Golf Complex was also the sixth best 6,000-meter time in 16 years.
SDSU was led by senior Christine Kent, whose 21:30.4 time was good for 90th out of 238 finishers. For the second consecutive race, junior Lily Seynaeve was the Aztecs' No. 2 finisher, running the course in 21:39.6 and 104th place. She bested her PR by 5.3 seconds. Running a course PR was Cassidy Towner, whose 22:01.9 run for 130th place was a 1.9-second improvement. Elaine Ribeiro was San Diego State's fourth finisher in 165th (22:35.4). Besting her course PR by 17.4 seconds was Angel Bucci (23:13.0, 195th), while Cali King (23:34.8, 204th) rounded out the Aztecs' finishers.
