SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State swimming and diving team hosts its first home dual meet of the 2017-18 campaign Friday, welcoming UC San Diego and Pepperdine to the Aztec Aquaplex on Friday afternoon at 2:00 p.m.
The Aztecs are fresh off its second A3 Invitational title in the last four years, finishing first place in the seven-team field on Nov. 18. The Aztecs topped both of this Friday's opponents in the event, as SDSU (1,671 points) finished in first place over second-place UCSD (1,335 points) and seventh-place Pepperdine (459.50 points). The Aztecs also defeated Pepperdine in a dual meet in Malibu on Oct. 5, 133-74. The dual meet win over the Waves extended SDSU's dual meet winning streak to 16 and after a 155.5-136.5 dual meet victory over UC Davis on Oct. 21, the Aztecs enter Friday having won each of its last 17 dual meets.
McKenna Meyer led the way for the Aztecs at the A3 Invitational, tallying 96 points - the most of any swimmer at the event, men or women - to earn A3 Invitational Female Swimmer of the Meet honors. Meyer posted a trio of Aztec Aquaplex records, all of which were career bests and first-place finishes.
Several of Meyer's season-best times rank near the top in the Mountain West this season. The sophomore owns a 10.01.24 in the 1000 free (third best in MW), a 16:35.87 in the 1650 free (third best in MW), and B-cut times of 4:12.46 in the 400 IM (best in MW) and 4:45.89 in the 500 free (second best in MW). In the 400 IM, Meyer is closely followed by teammate Frida Berggren, who has the second-fastest time in the Mountain West with a B-cut time of 4:14.06. Berggren owns the best 200 fly time in the conference, possessing a B-cut time of 1:59.32.
Meyer and Berggren are the only two swimmers in the Mountain West to have B-cut times in the 200 IM. Meyer took first place in the 200 IM preliminaries with a MW-best time of 2:00.51, before Berggren brought home the first-place title in the finals with a time of 2:00.93.
The Aztecs earned first place in all but two events at the A3 Invitational. SDSU also recorded the second best 800 free relay time in the conference this year, posting a 7:20.86 between Berggren, Peyton Wilson, Meyer, and Marina Preiss on Nov. 17 at the A3 Invitational.
Freshman Elliyana Ferrin also posted a first-place finish and B-cut time in the 100 back at the A3 Invitational, touching the wall at 54.55. Summer Harrison and Courtney Vincent each recorded B-cut times in the 100 fly at the A3 Invitational, using times of 53.88 and 54.42, respectively.
After the double dual meet with the Tritons and Waves, SDSU sees a three-week break from competition and will host Cal Poly and Mountain West foe Air Force on Friday, Dec. 22.
