MALIBU, Calif. ââ'¬" San Diego State's Raul de la Torre (Calexico, Calif.) and Nicholas Mitchell (Ojai, Calif.) emerged victorious in their respective third-round consolation singles matches Friday at the ITA Southwest Regional Championships presented by Oracle on the campus of Pepperdine University.
De la Torre rallied from an early deficit to knock off Lucas Bellamy of UCLA in a super-tiebreaker, 2-6, 6-2, 10-8, while Mitchell was a winner in straight sets over Scotland Garapedian of host Pepperdine, 6-4, 6-1.
With the results, de la Torre is scheduled to square off against August Holmgren of USD in the fourth round on Saturday, while Mitchell awaits a showdown with UCLA's Bryce Pereira. Earlier in round three, Holmgren dispatched Antoine Noel of Cal Poly in a super-tiebreaker, 6-1, 4-6, 10-8, while Pereira posted a 6-1, 6-4 conquest of Loyola Marymount's Ryan Brown.
However, the Aztecs came up empty handed in their three remaining consolation battles, including Rafael Gonzalez Almazan (Madrid, Spain), who suffered a hard-fought loss to Daunte Harris of UC Santa Barbara in another super-tiebreaker, 2-6, 7-5, 11-9, while David Hough (Traralgon, Australia) fought valiantly in the opening set of his clash with Blaz Seric of Hawai'i before dropping a straight-set decision, 7-6(8), 6-3. In addition, Daniel de Torre (Calexico, Calif.) experienced a similar fate against Pratt Keerasuntonpong of USD, falling by a count of 6-3, 6-3.
Elsewhere, SDSU's lone standing player in the main draw singles bracket, Sander Gjoels-Andersen (Klampenborg, Denmark), forced a third set in his round of 32 encounter with UCLA's Logan Staggs, but came up just short, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2. The ITA Southwest Regional Championships continue on Saturday with consolation singles matches beginning at 9 a.m. PT.
