MALIBU, Calif. ââ'¬" San Diego State men's tennis players Nicholas Mitchell (Ojai, Calif.) and Raul de la Torre (Calexico, Calif.) had their runs ended in the consolation bracket of the 2017 ITA Southwest Regional Championships presented by Oracle on Saturday after each dropped their round of 16 matches at Pepperdine University.

Mitchell gave UCLA's Bryce Pereira everything he could handle, but came up short in a super-tiebreaker, 6-2, 6-7(6), 10-6, while de la Torre was eliminated by August Holmgren of USD, 6-0, 6-4.

Four Aztecs played an extra consolation match on Saturday, with Ignacio Martinez (Weston, Fla.) and Jan Kirchhoff (Germany) picking up victories over a pair of Hawai'i opponents. Martinez was a winner in straight sets over Felix Albert, 6-4, 6-1, while Kirchhoff posted a nearly identical score of 6-4, 6-2 in his conquest of Lucas Labrunie.

Conversely, Rafael Gonzalez Almazan (Madrid, Spain) and Daniel de la Torre (Calexico, Calif.) were upended by two Cal Poly adversaries after each dropped a second-set tiebreaker. Gonzalez Almazan battled Karl Enander before falling by a count of 6-2, 7-6(8), while de la Torre was upended by Karthik Padmanabhan, 6-4, 7-6(3).

San Diego State wraps up its fall tournament schedule in three weeks when it competes in the LMU Invitational, Nov. 10-12, in Los Angeles, California.
