SAN DIEGO -

In conjunction with San Diego State’s Sports in American Society Symposium, Title IX expert Janet Judge, Esq., educated SDSU student-athletes, coaches and the campus community at large about Title IX Monday.

Judge, a higher education and employment law attorney and partner at Holland & Knight LLC, has more than 30 years of experience in sports and civil rights law. A nationally recognized expert on Title IX and civil rights compliance, she has conducted workshops related to Title IX and gender equity at more than 500 NCAA institutions. For 10 years, Judge was a founder and president of Sports Law Associates in Boston, a full-service intercollegiate sports law firm, before joining Holland & Knight this summer.

“The purpose of my presentation was educational, to prompt discussion and to provide the history of Title IX, my experience living it and working in the field,” Judge said. “I also share a little bit about how far we’ve come.”

Judge was a three-sport athlete at Harvard in soccer, basketball, and track and field, and coached basketball and soccer at Simmons College while working toward her law degree. She then served in multiple positions within Harvard’s athletics administration before embarking on her career in law.

“Presentations such as Janet’s show the strong collaboration we have with departments across campus that are teaching about the role sport plays in today’s society,” said Jenny Bramer, SDSU’s Executive Associate Athletic Director and Senior Woman Administration. “Our decision to bring in presenters such as Janet Judge and Susan Cayleff adds to the well-rounded education our students receive at San Diego State.”

Cayleff, a professor of women’s studies at SDSU, gave a presentation at the Symposium last year on Babe Didrikson Zaharias, the first woman to play in a PGA Tour event on whom Cayleff wrote a biography. “The presentation today provided good foundational information,” Cayleff said. “Janet Judge showed the challenges ahead with regards to Title IX, and reiterated that we should not get lazy and complacent when dealing with Title IX.”

The presentation by Judge was a part of San Diego State’s Sports in American Society Symposium. In its second year, the Sports in American Society Symposium stimulates discussion about sport and its place within higher education and the community at large. Through collaboration with on and off-campus members of the SDSU community, the symposium series was developed to foster an inter-disciplinary approach to exploring sport.

Broad-based discussions from participating collaborators explore various angles of sport-related topics by a number of resources and disciplines. Participating San Diego State departments include Hospitality and Tourism Management, Athletics, Business Administration, Exercise & Nutritional Sciences, Health and Human Services, and Women’s Studies.

All of the presentations within the Sports in American Society Symposium are open to the public and free to attend.
