The San Diego State men's soccer team has announced the retirement of eight jerseys on Saturday night in conjunction with the team's 50th Anniversary celebration this Saturday. The Aztecs will host Santa Clara for a 7:00 p.m. nonconference contest at the SDSU Sports Deck.
Honorees include Peter Goosens (1969-72), Alan Kelly (1974-77), Cle Kooiman (1981-82), Kevin Crow (1979-82), Marcelo Balboa (1988-89), Kyle Whittemore (1984, 1986-88), Eric Wynalda (1987-89) and Tally Hall (2003-06). This group includes several stints in Major League Soccer, four players who played for the United States National Team and 10 All-American selections.
Admission to this Saturday's contest is free, and the first 500 fans in attendance will receive a free SDSU soccer scarf.
D Peter Goossens (1969-72)
- 1969 First Team All-American, first All-American in school history and first-ever from Southern California
- All-Southern California and All-Southern Section performer
- Manned backline that allowed just 14 goals in 11 games to help the Aztecs to a 9-1-1 record in 1969
D Kevin Crow (1979-82)
- Competed in the 1984 and 1988 Olympics for the United States
- Two-time All-American (1981-1982)
- First SDSU men's soccer player inducted into the San Diego State Hall of Fame (1989)
- Signed professional contract with the San Diego Sockers in 1982
- Manned defense that allowed just 0.90 goals per game in 1981
MF Alan Kelly (1974-77)
- Tied for third in program history with 28 career assists, eighth in program history with 28 career goals
- SDSU's first two-time All-American, including a First Team selection in 1977
- SDSU's seventh professional signee, singing with the Los Angeles Aztecs in 1977
- Led team in scoring for three consecutive years, with nine goals in 1975, seven goals in 1976, and nine goals in 1977
D Cle Kooiman (1981-82)
- Competed for the United States national team in 1994 World Cup
- 1982 NSCAA All-Far West Selection
- Signed professional contract with the Los Angeles Lazers in 1982
- First American player to captain Liga MX team
- Played two seasons in the MLS (1996-97)
- Assistant coach for U20 United States National team
D Marcelo Balboa (1988-89)
- Inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame in 2005
- Member of the 1990, 1994, and 1998 United States World Cup teams
- 1988 & 1989 Hermann Trophy Finalist
- Third two-time All-American in SDSU history with First Team honors in 1988 and Second Team nod in 1989
- 1988 Soccer America Top Ten award winner
- Inducted into the San Diego State Hall of Fame in 1995
- Signed professional contract with Leon-Mexico in 1993
- In 1988, SDSU defense only allowed 10 goals in 22 games to help earn a 15-3-4 record
- Recorded 12 goals and 13 assists in two-year SDSU career

- Signed professional contract with San Francisco Blackhawks in 1990
- Set single-season goals record in 1984 with 21 tallies, 20 goals in 1986 is second most in program history

- Inducted into the San Diego State Hall of Fame in 1996

- Led the nation with a .889 save percentage in 2005, finished second with a 0.49 goals against average (both are single season records at SDSU)
- Posted a school-record 12 shutouts in 2005 NCAA tournament run
- Recorded 9-5-4 record with a 1.04 goals against average and six shutouts during 2006 NCAA tournament run
- Second in SDSU history with 256 career saves
- Signed professional contract with Esbjerg FB (Denmark)
- Spent eight seasons in the MLS, including time with the Houston Dynamo (2009-14), Orlando City (2015), and D.C. United (2016)
- Earned two All-Star selections, two team MVP awards and started in two MLS cups during MLS career
