SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State rowing team spent Saturday morning racing in the Row for the Cure on Mission Bay, where they logged first place finishes in both the open eight and open four categories. The annual event, hosted by UC San Diego, raises funds and awareness for Susan G. Komen San Diego.
"Good results all around, but more important was the cause," head coach Bill Zack said. "The team wore pink hair ties in honor of the mom of one of our seniors who is a breast cancer survivor."
First up, the Aztecs raced four boats in the open eight at 7:40 a.m., where the SDSU ‘A' boat led the pack with a 12:36 finish, while the Aztec ‘B' boat trailed shortly behind in second, finishing in 12:41. Just behind third place-finisher USD ‘A' (12:47) was the SDSU ‘C' boat, cruising in for a fourth place time of 13:15, ahead of USD ‘B' (13:34), UCSD ‘B' (13:48) and UCSD ‘A' (13:51). The SDSU ‘D' eight boat recorded an eighth place finish of 14:14 and was a solid 45 seconds ahead of UCSD's ‘C' boat, which finished in 15:01.
Up next, the Scarlet and Black's three open four boats notched first, third and fourth place finishes in the 9 a.m. race against both the Tritons and Toreros. The SDSU ‘A' boat logged the best time of the group, coming in at 14:02, while the USD ‘A' boat finished seconds behind the Aztecs in 14:05. The SDSU ‘B' kept the top three spots in close contention, finishing the event in 14:13. The Aztecs' ‘C' boat took fourth with a time of 14:40, ahead of UCSD ‘A' (15:03), UCSD ‘B' (15:26), USD ‘B' (15:27), USD ‘C' (15:40) and UCSD ‘C' (16:36).
In the team's final event of the morning, SDSU freshman Anastasia Vontzou clocked in at 16 minutes flat in the singles category at 9:20 a.m.
Following this morning's races, the team christened a four boat in honor of late San Diego rowing legend, Duke Robinson, who made major contributions to the local, national and international rowing scene for decades.
"The christening ceremony was really nice," said Zack. "Duke's sister told the team that when she was their age, all that SDSU women could do was join Shell and Oar, the support group for men's rowing. Now, thanks to Duke and others, we are in year 20 as a varsity sport with lots of hard working and talented women rowers."
SDSU will spend the next few weeks practicing for its final fall event, the San Diego Fall Classic, which is set for Sunday, Nov. 12, at 7:30 a.m. on Mission Bay.
