Storylines
- San Diego State will play host to a pair of conference games this week when San José State and Fresno State visit the Aztecs at SDSU Sports Deck. The Aztecs and Spartans will clash Friday at 7 p.m. PT and will precede the noon PT match-up on Sunday featuring SDSU and Fresno State. Both games will stream on the Mountain West Network.
- On Friday, the first 250 fans in attendance will receive a free San Diego State t-shirt. Admission is free for all home games at SDSU Sports Deck.
- San Diego State enters this week with a bit of momentum having swept its trip to Utah State and Boise State last Friday and Sunday, respectively. The Aztecs led the Aggies, 2-0, late in the contest before allowing a goal in the 84th minute en route to a 2-1 win. Then vs. the Broncos, SDSU received a goal in the third minute, survived a Boise State attack in the middle part of the game before tacking on an insurance goal in the 85th minute to earn a 2-0 victory.
- In the game at Utah State, both teams played a scoreless first half, but the Aztecs struck first, notching a goal in the 48th minute. Mia Root was the offender and posted her team-best fifth goal of the year to give SDSU the lead. Just over five minutes later, San Diego State was the beneficiary of an own goal, which doomed the Aztecs in their previous game vs. UNLV (L, 0-1). The Aztecs carried the 2-0 lead deep into the game before the Aggies scored to provide the final margin.
- At Boise State, Stacie Moran scored 127 seconds into the game to give the Aztecs the early lead. The game was a back-and-forth affair that saw the momentum sway from SDSU to Boise State and back to SDSU. Both times the Aztecs had the momentum, they scored, starting with Moran. Then San Diego State survived a Bronco offensive assault that forced both the Aztec defense and goalkeeper Gabby English to make stop after stop. Once SDSU regained momentum, Chloe Frisch scored off an Aliyah Utush feed to sweep the trip.
- Moran and Frisch, who are on different ends of their career spectrums, scored their first collegiate goals against the Broncos. Moran is a senior who was playing in her 75th career game. Frisch, meanwhile, was appearing in her 12th game of her true freshman campaign.
- Much has been made of San Diego State's youth on display in 2017, and the trip last week provided further evidence. Of SDSU's three goals scored by players, two were by true freshmen (Frisch, Root). The class has accounted for nine of the Aztecs' 15 goals, a total that does not count the own goal at Utah State.
- Sophomore Gabby English posted her 11th career shutout in San Diego State's 2-0 win at Boise State. The blanking of the Broncos put herself all alone in seventh place, breaking a tie with Elizabeth Judkins for most career shutouts in school history. English's next shutout will move her into a fifth-place tie with Sophia Perez (2002, 2004).
- Utush picked up her third assist of the season at Boise State to take the team lead. The senior upped her season point total to seven, which ranks second to Root's 11 points. Utush now has 52 career points and needs five more to tie Fay deLeon for ninth in school history.
- For the third straight week, the Aztecs will face a team that received first-place votes in the MW preseason coaches poll. Week 1 featured a UNLV team that earned five first-place tallies and defeated SDSU on a own goal. Week 2 brought the Aztecs to Logan to face Utah State, a team that picked up one first-place vote. Now, in Week 3, San Diego State will oppose a San José State squad that finished in second with 108 points and a trio of first-place votes. The Aztecs were the favorites with 110 points and three first-place votes.
- SDSU will face an SJSU program that it has gone 10-2-1 against all-time. The last three meetings have produced all three outcomes available in soccer. In 2015, the teams played to a 1-1 draw, but the Aztecs saw the Spartans claim the MW title in penalty kicks. Last season, San José State handed San Diego State a 4-0 defeat in San Jose, before the Aztecs repaid the Spartans in the conference tournament, winning, 2-0, in the semifinals.
- San Diego State is 11-2-1 all-time vs. Sunday's foe, Fresno State. The Aztecs are unbeaten in their last five meetings with the Bulldogs, but tied them in Fresno, 1-1, last year. SDSU is 7-0 vs. Fresno State in games played in America's Finest City.
