WOLCOTT, Colo. -- The San Diego State women's golf team slipped two places into third at the Golfweek Conference Challenge on Tuesday after posting a combined 12-over-par 300 during the second round at Red Sky Golf Club.
With their score, the Aztecs finished the day with a 36-hole total of 13-over 589, trailing event host and front-running Denver (+7) by six shots heading into Wednesday's final round on the par-72, 6,216-yard Tom Fazio Course. Arizona (+11) vaulted nine places into second place after carding a tournament-low 287, while Pepperdine (+14) sits in fourth, followed by Campbell (+17) and Michigan (+17).
Individually, three of SDSU's five starters lost ground on Tuesday, including senior Georgia Lacey (Del Mar, Calif.), who shot a 75 to drop out of the second spot into a tie for eighth at 1-over 145. The Torrey Pines High alumna made eagle on the par-5, 495-yard No. 2 for the second straight day, but found limited success otherwise, suffering five bogeys, including four on the back nine.
With her total, Lacey remains seven strokes behind Arizona's fast-charging Haley Moore (-6), who recorded a second-round 64 to take over the lead, while Denver's Mary Weinstein (-4) sits in second, followed by five golfers tied for third at even-par.
Haleigh Krause (Eugene, Ore.), who began the day tied for the runner-up position with Lacey, tumbled nine places into a tie for 11th at 2-over 146 after logging a second-round 76. The Aztec senior tied for the team lead with four birdies, including an impressive drain on the par-3, 135-yard No. 17, which ranked as the toughest hole of the afternoon. However, a rash of eight bogeys, including five on the front nine, proved too much to overcome.
Gioia Carpinelli (Bopplesen, Switzerland) was also unable to avoid a drop on the leaderboard, slipping five spots into a tie for 18th with a combined 5-over 147 after shooting a 75 on Tuesday. The SDSU freshman was 1-under through eight holes thanks to a birdie on the second green followed by six consecutive pars. However, a bogey on the par-3 ninth foreshadowed a rough back nine for the Swiss native. Despite a birdie at the par-4, 400-yard 16th, Carpinelli experienced four additional bogeys, including two on her final holes, which hastened her fall.
Conversely, the Aztecs' biggest gain of the day belonged to Fernanda Escauriza (Asuncion, Paraguay), who registered a team-best 74 to climb 11 places into a tie for 39th at 7-over 151. The Aztec sophomore got off to a hot start with three birdies on her first five holes, including back-to-back conversions on the second and third greens. She also finished with a drain at the par-5, 505-yard 18th, but a pair of double bogeys at No. 8 and No. 15 coupled with two other bogeys prevented a steeper ascent.
Rounding out the SDSU delegation was Sara Kjellker (Hollviken, Sweden), who shaved 10 strokes off her total from the previous day with a second-round 77. Despite six bogeys, including a hiccup at No. 12, the Aztec freshman finished strong with five straight pars before recording a birdie at No. 18 to jump two places into 86th at 20-over 164.
The Golfweek Conference Challenge concludes on Wednesday when San Diego State tees off alongside Denver and Arizona for the final round, beginning with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. MT/8 a.m. PT.
