ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. ââ'¬" San Diego State men's golfer PJ Samiere (Kailua, Hawaii) fired a 3-under-par 69 during the final round of the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate Saturday to finish alone in fourth place on the individual leaderboard with a combined 2-under 214.
Samiere was a model of consistency over the final 18 holes, recording 13 pars and four birdies, including an impressive drain on the par-4, 517-yard No. 10, which ranked as the most difficult hole of the weekend. Despite a bogey on his final green at the par-3 third, the Aztec senior still managed to climb three spots in the standings for his seventh career top-10 placement.
With his round, Samiere finished the tournament six shots behind medalist George Cunningham of Arizona, who carded an 8-under 208 to win by three strokes over runner-up Peter Kuest of Brigham Young (-5). Kuest shot a weekend-low 66 on Saturday to edge third-place Carl Yuan of Washington (-4), while Patrick Fishburn of Brigham Young and Travis Fredborg, an individual competitor from Arizona, tied for fifth behind Samiere at 1-under.
Despite shaving eight strokes off its second-round score, San Diego State was unable to gain on the leaders, remaining in a tie for sixth after notching a combined 4-over 292 on Saturday. With their score, the Aztecs shared the sixth position with host New Mexico and Colorado at 20-over 884 on the par-72, 7,555-yard UNM Championship Course.
BYU (+9) jumped two spots in the standings after shooting a final-round 287 to capture the team title, while Washington (+13) took second, followed closely by Arizona (+14), UNLV (+15) and Colorado State (+17).
In addition, Puwit Anupansuebsai (Nakhon Phanom, Thailand) just missed out on a top-20 placement for SDSU, tying for 22nd at 6-over 222 after posting a 74 over the final 18 holes. Despite three bogeys, the Aztec freshman minimized the damage with 14 pars and a birdie on the par-5, 544-yard 18th to vault three places on the leaderboard.
Conversely, Blake Abercrombie (Rocklin, Calif.) lost ground on Saturday, slipping nine spots into a tie for 27th at 7-over 223 on the heels of a final-round 76. The SDSU senior got off to a sluggish start with four bogeys on his first six holes before engineering a string of six pars and two birdies. However, two additional bogeys on his final four greens hastened his drop.
Elsewhere, Eric Ghim (Glendale, Ariz.) saved his best for last, posting a final-round 73 to tie for 61st at 13-over 229. The Aztec sophomore rebounded from a rough stretch of three bogeys on his first five holes with five pars and consecutive birdies at No. 17 and No. 18. Ghim had his momentum stalled by a bogey at No. 1, but closed strong with a birdie on the par-4 third sandwiched around four pars to catapult 18 places on the leaderboard.
The Aztec starting lineup also included Trevor Norby (Carlsbad, Calif.), who struggled once again on Saturday, logging a final-round 78 to finish the weekend in a tie for 66th at 14-over 230. The SDSU sophomore was at even-par for the round after 12 holes, draining his third and final birdie on the par-5 No. 1, but consecutive bogeys and a quadruple bogey at the par-4 fifth precipitated a drop of eight spots in the standings.
Rounding out the Aztec contingency were freshman Steve Sugimoto (San Diego, Calif.) and Ryan McCoy (Temecula, Calif.), who competed as unattached golfers over the weekend. Sugimoto shot a 75 on Saturday to finish in a tie for 72nd at 15-over 231. The Rancho Bernardo High alumnus carded two birdies, including a conversion on the par-4, 454-yard No. 2.
On the other hand, McCoy completed his first collegiate tournament in a tie for 92nd at 239 following an 84 over the final 18 holes.
San Diego State returns to action in just over two weeks when it travels to the Bay Area for the Alister MacKenzie Invitational, Oct 9-10, in Fairfax, California.
