SAN DIEGO – Former San Diego State men's golfer Xander Schauffele and former men's soccer player Joe Corona were two of eight athletes named Stars of the Month for July by the San Diego Hall of Champions.
After tying for fifth at the U.S. Open in June, Schauffele captured his first career victory on the PGA Tour by winning The Greenbrier Classic on July 9, in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia.
A rookie on the Tour this season, Schauffele carded a 3-under-par 67 during the final round, finishing the tournament at 14-under 266 to edge runner-up Robert Streb by one stroke on the par-70, 7,286-yard Old White TPC course at Greenbrier Resort.
Later in the month, Schauffele tied for 20th at The Open Championship at Royal Birkdale in Southport, England with a collective 1-under 279, vaulting 32 spots on the leaderboard on the strength of a final-round 65.
A two-time PING All-West Region honoree, Schauffele received All-America recognition following a stellar senior campaign at San Diego State in 2015, garnering third-team accolades from both the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) and Golfweek.
Corona, meanwhile, earned his award by scoring a key goal to help the United States defeat Nicaragua 3-0 en route to winning the Group B pool at the CONCACAF Gold Cup. The U.S. would eventually capture the event with a 2-1 victory over Jamaica on July 26, in Santa Clara, California.
Corona played his one season at San Diego State in 2008 before joining Club Tijuana of Liga MX. The Chula Vista native and Sweetwater High School product recorded seven points on three goals and one assist in 501 minutes during his freshman campaign for the Aztecs, making 15 appearances with three starts.
