BALTIMORE -

2017 SDSU Football Preseason Accolades

San Diego State junior Christian Chapman (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad HS) has been named a candidate for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm award, which goes out to the quarterback with the best accomplishments on and off the field. Chapman is one of 47 candidates for the award.

Chapman is coming off a stellar 2016 season where he was 133-for-251 (61.0 pct.) for 1,994 yards and 20 touchdowns with just six interceptions, owning a 149.2 pass efficiency rating. Chapman, whose 61.0 completion percentage was the third best by an Aztec since 1996, ranked second in the Mountain West in pass touchdown percentage (11th nationally, 8.0) and touchdown-to-interception percentage (T-23rd nationally, 3.33), third in pass efficiency rating (24th nationally, 149.20) and pass touchdowns (T-45th nationally, 20), fourth in yards per attempt (35th nationally, 7.94), yards per completion (41st nationally, 13.03) and completion percentage (49th nationally, 61.0), and fourth in interception percentage (58th nationally, 2.4) (all min. 180 attempts).

Chapman enters his junior season with a 13-3 record as the starting quarterback, including a 4-0 mark in postseason play. Among the all-time SDSU quarterbacks, Chapman ranks second in winning percentage (.813), fourth in pass efficiency rating (148.2) and tied for eighth in victories (13).

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award and The Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Educational Foundation. After three decades of honoring these quarterbacks' achievements, the Golden Arm Award is the only college football award that has 10 previous recipients still competing in the NFL.

The Golden Arm Award committee will announce the top-15 finalists for the award in September, while the presentation of the Golden Arm Award will be held on Friday, Dec. 8 at the Embassy Suites Baltimore Inner Harbor & Grand.

The Aztecs are coming off an 11-3 season, knocking off Wyoming, 27-24, in the MW Championship game and Houston, 34-10, in the Las Vegas Bowl, to finish with a No. 25 ranking in both the AP Top 25 poll and the Amway Coaches Poll. It is just the second time that SDSU has been ranked in the final AP poll in program history (also 1977). The 11 wins tied a school single-season record as San Diego State became the first team in program history with back-to-back 11-win campaigns.

2017 Aztec football season tickets, mini plans and single-game tickets are now on sale. Season tickets start at $125, while mini plans start at $90. Fans can purchase tickets at GoAztecs.com, over the phone by calling (619) 283-7378, or by visiting Qualcomm Stadium's Window E Monday-Friday between 9 a.m. PT and 5 p.m. PT.
