SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State men's basketball program has added Patrick Fisher to its roster, head coach Brian Dutcher announced today. The 6-4 guard from Carlsbad arrives on Montezuma Mesa after spending his true freshman season at Winthrop. He will sit out the 2017-18 campaign.
Fisher, who attended nearby La Costa Canyon High School before heading to Vermont Academy in Saxtons River, Vt., played in two of the Eagles' first three games in 2016-17, scoring four points on 2-of-2 shooting in nine combined minutes. Against Ferrum College, he had two points in two minutes before matching his scoring production in seven minutes at Florida State.
Mononucleosis derailed Fisher's season and the guard missed the rest of Winthrop's campaign, which resulted in a share of the Big South regular-season championship, the Big South tournament title and an appearance in the NCAA tournament. All told, Fisher was a part of a Winthrop squad and turned in a 26-7 (15-3 Big South) record.
Prior to his time in Rock Hill, S.C., Fisher averaged 15.2 points on 56 percent shooting (88 FT pct.), 4.4 rebounds, 6.6 assists and 2.3 steals as a senior at Vermont Academy en route to his second all-league selection. In his final season at LCC before heading to The Green Mountain State, Fisher helped the Mavericks win the 2014 CIF San Diego Section Open Division crown with a 12-point, 6-rebound performance.
San Diego State in 2017-18 is set to return three starters, including an all-conference backcourt of Trey Kell and Jeremy Hemsley, and five players overall (Montaque Gill-Caesar, Hemsley, Max Hoetzel, Kell, Malik Pope) who saw action in the starting lineup a year ago. The Aztecs also add Devin Watson to the roster after he sat out last season following his transfer from San Francisco where he averaged 20.3 points and 4.9 assists as a sophomore in 2015-16. In addition to Watson, SDSU will welcome four-star athletes Jalen McDaniels (redshirt freshman) and Jordan Schakel (true freshman), and three-star guard Adam Seiko (true freshman).
