LONG BEACH, Calif. - San Diego State was limited to five hits and held scoreless in a 6-0 loss to No. 9 Long Beach State Friday evening at the NCAA Regional at Blair Field in Long Beach, Calif.

The Dirtbags got a complete-game shutout effort from Dave Smith, who kept the Aztec offense off balance all night while improving to 9-1 on the season. The senior right-hander scattered five hits and a walk with one strikeout.

Long Beach State wasted little time in getting on the board as it scored three times in the opening inning against Aztec senior lefty Brett Seeburger. Those three markers came on five hits which included a pair of infield singles to start the game.

The Dirtbags added another run in the bottom of the second on a hit batter, sacrifice bunt and RBI single to take a 4-0 lead after two. That would be more than enough to win the contest with SDSU unable to solve Smith.

The Aztecs did put their leadoff man on base five times during the contest via a hit, hit batter or error, but could not cash in. Only two SDSU runners reached as far as second base, and in each case it came with two outs.

Alan Trejo ended the night with two hits and also reached on a walk as he was the lone Aztecs to get on base more than once. Of the 15 hits between the two teams, none went for extra bases,

After surrendering the run in the second inning, Seeburger settled in and retired nine of the next 10 batters he faced. In the sixth, however, LBSU loaded the bases and scored twice on a two-out RBI single by Jarren Duran.

That hit would mark the end of the night for Seeburger, who finished with 5.2 innings and allowing the six runs on nine hits with a pair of walks and five strikeouts. He would take the loss and see his season record drop to 10-3.

With the loss, San Diego State moves into Saturday's elimination contest against UCLA, which dropped a 3-2 decision to Texas Friday afternoon. The Aztecs and Bruins will meet a 1:00 p.m. at Blair Field with the winner continuing on and the loser seeing its season come to an end.
