There are over 20 current and incoming Aztecs participating in summer ball leagues around the country. Here is a quick update on how some of them are doing so far.
In Alaska, Logan Boyer and Harrison Pyatt are playing with the Anchorage Bucs. Boyer has 12 strikeouts in 8 2/3 innings of work so far with a 1.04 ERA. Pyatt has thrown 10 innings allowing no walks while recording eight strikeouts. Both expected to be integral parts of the SDSU pitching staff in 2018. David Hensley will also be playing in Alaska for the Bucs.
There are a number of Aztecs competing in the Northwoods League competing this summer. For the Duluth Huskies, Dean Nevarez hit a home run in his first at-bat and has three hits early into the season. Tre Brown has thrown 3 innings allowing one hit and recording two strikeouts.
Incoming freshman pitcher Daniel Ritcheson, sophomore catcher Ryan Orr, and incoming junior college transfer Michael Diffley (pitcher) will be playing with the Kalamazoo Growlers of the Northwoods League.
Another junior college transfer, Noah Strohl, has been tearing up the Northwoods League. After 12 games, he is hitting .457 with two home runs and six doubles for the Thunder Bay Border Cats.
Pitcher Hayden Petrovick is the final Aztec competing in the Northwoods League, playing for the Willmar Stingers. He has thrown 13 1/3 innings this summer allowing 10 hits while striking out 11.
Incoming Freshman Travis Weston and Casey O'Sullivan will soon start playing in the Great West League in Northern California for the Marysville Gold Sox.
Outfielder Chase Calabuig is off to a hot start, hitting .500 with a double and home run early on for the Brazos Valley Bombers of the Texas Collegiate League.
Grant Mayeaux, who did not play for the Aztecs in 2017 due to injury, is showing some offensive ability hitting .400 with five doubles and a home run for the Conejo Oaks. Senior Ray Lambert is also playing with the Oaks.
Justin Goossen-Brown red-shirted for the Aztecs this past season, but is hoping to get some innings out of the bullpen next year. He has thrown seven innings for the San Luis Obispo Blues allowing only three hits with six strikeouts.
Denz'l Chapman will be playing outfield for the Academy Barons of the California Collegiate League. He had a pair of stolen bases in his first game with the Barons.
Pitcher Elijah Greene, a freshman this past season, will be playing play in the MINK League this summer with the Clarinda A's.
Jacob Maekawa, who saw action in the infield this past season, has five hits in his first eight games for the DC Grays of the Cal Ripken League. He is expected to come into his sophomore year fighting for one of the infield positions.
In nine at bats thus far for the Palm Springs Power, catcher Hunter Stratton has recorded four hits including a triple.
Jordan Verdon is three games into the summer for the Harwich Mariners of the Cape Cod League. He will be going into his junior season this fall looking to continue job for the Aztecs.
