SAN DIEGO - San Diego State water polo rising junior Paola Vizcarra and incoming freshman Lucia Carballo are in Trinidad & Tobago to compete for Mexico at CCCAN 2017. The Central American and Caribbean Amateur Swimming Confederation tournament is set for June 22-28.
The duo is part of a 13-member Mexico team that will be competing against Venezuela, Cuba, Puerto Rico and the host, Trinidad & Tobago. Mexico will play four games in the first four days of the tournament before enjoying a bye. Should Mexico be in the top four, it would play in a four-team playoff over the final two days (June 27-28).
Vizcarra is coming off a breakout redshirt sophomore season in which she played in 30 of the team's 32 games, helping the Aztecs win their fourth straight Golden Coast regular-season title. The center who attended Hilltop High in San Diego recorded 13 goals on 39.4-percent shooting, one assist and 12 steals, while drawing 10 ejections.
Carballo is following in the footsteps of her sister, Carina, who played for San Diego State from 2012-15 and for Mexico in the 2015 Pan American Games. The incoming Carballo recently graduated from Santa Margarita High School in Rancho Santa Margarita where she helped the Eagles to a 19-9 regular-season record before falling in the first round of the 2017 CIF playoffs.
When Vizcarra and Carballo return to campus in the fall, they will be part of a program that, as previously mentioned, won their fourth straight Golden Coast Conference regular-season title in 2017, going 7-0 in the process, which ran their all-time GCC record to 26-0. SDSU also finished the year ranked No. 13 in the final top-25 poll, its highest final ranking since 2013.
