A number of current and former San Diego State track and field student-athletes are representing their home countries at their respective national championships this weekend.
Aztec juniors Simone Glenn and Ashley Henderson will compete at the USA Track & Field Championships in Sacramento, Calif., alongside former Aztecs Whitney Ashley (discus throw), Kristen Brown (pole vault), Allison Reaser (heptathlon) and Kortney Ross (pole vault). Shanieka Thomas (triple jump) goes for a national title at the Jamaican Senior National Championships, hosted by Kingston's National Stadium.
Fresh off their appearances at the 2017 NCAA Championships, Glenn and Henderson are running the 200 and 100, respectively.
Glenn runs the first round of the 200 at 12:15 p.m. (PT) on Saturday, with the semifinals slated for 12:20 p.m. (PT) and the finals scheduled for later that day at 2:43 p.m. (PT). She is seeded 27th of 32 declared athletes, and will run in the third of four heats in the first round. Glenn garnered first-team All-American status in the 4x100 and an honorable mention honor in the 200 following her performances at the 2017 NCAA Championships. She finished 21st at the national collegiate meet in the 200 with a 23.69 time.
Henderson races in the first round of the 100 on Thursday at 5:10 p.m. (PT), with the semifinals on Friday scheduled for 5:16 p.m. (PT) and the finals slated for 7:52 p.m. (PT). She is the ninth seed of 32 declared athletes, and, in the first round, will run in the second of four heats. Henderson, a two-time first-team All-American this season, anchored the Aztecs' 4x100-meter relay to a fourth-place finish at the NCAA Championships on June 12. Just 50 minutes after the 4x100, Henderson took sixth in the 100 in 11.19.
Ashley, seeded third out of 19 declared athletes with a mark of 209 feet, 5 inches (63.85 meters), throws the discus at 5:50 p.m. (PT) on Thursday. Ashley, who won a 2012 NCAA title in the event while with the Aztecs, competed for the U.S. at the 2016 Rio Olympics after winning the event at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials. She entered the Summer Games ranked in a tie for 11th in the world with a mark of 212 feet (64.62 meters). While at SDSU from 2011-12, Ashley was a four-time USTFCCCA All-American and a five-time MW champion. She is representing NIKE.
Brown and Ross have declared for the pole vault on Sunday at noon.
Brown is seeded 13th out of 17 declared athletes with a mark of 14-feet, 11 inches (4.55 meters). Brown, a seven-time Mountain West track and field champion while with SDSU from 2013-15, finished eighth at her first-ever U.S. outdoor championship meet at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials. Brown is representing Chula Vista Elite.
Ross is seeded at No. 11 of the 17 declared athletes in the pole vault with a 15 foot, 1 inch mark (4.60 meters). Ross, who has finished ninth-or-better in all 12 outdoor meets in which she has competed since March 2016, is competing in her first U.S. outdoor championship meet. The San Diego native and Aztec from 2014-16 placed fourth at the USATF Indoor Championships earlier this year. She is representing Arete Elite Track Club.
The heptathlon kicks off for Reaser on Sat., June 24 with the 100-meter hurdles at 10:45 a.m (PT), followed by the high jump (noon PT), shot put (2 p.m. PT) and 200 meters (3:04 p.m. PT). On Sunday, Reaser competes in the long jump at 11 a.m. (PT), the javelin throw (noon PT) and the 800 meters (1:28 p.m. PT). This marks Reaser's fifth consecutive U.S. outdoor championship meet (sixth straight including a U.S. Junior Championship appearance in 2011). Reaser, who took 11th at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials with 5,865 points, is representing Arete Elite Track Club.
At the Jamaican Senior National Championships, Thomas is on tap for the triple jump on Sunday at 5 p.m. (ET). Thomas placed 13th in the event at the 2016 Rio Olympics while representing Jamaica. She finished her SDSU career in 2014 as a three-time NCAA triple jump champion (2013-14 outdoor, 2014 indoor) and a two-time runner-up finisher (2012 outdoor, 2013 indoor). She was a seven-time USTFCCCA All-American and nine-time MW champion.
