SAN JOSE, Calif. - San Diego Scored twice in the top of the 12th inning and defeated San Jose State, 5-3, Saturday afternoon at Municipal Stadium in San Jose, Calif., as it registered its 10th series win of the season. The victory was also the third straight for the Aztecs, who improved to 33-15 overall and 16-7 in the Mountain West.
SDSU was in control over the first half of the contest after taking a 2-0 lead in the top of the third. Those runs came when Hunter Stratton doubled to left and was followed by Chase Calabuig's sixth home run of the season to give the visitors the early advantage.
On the mound, senior Dominic Purpura held the Spartans hitless over the first four frames before surrendering a bunt single in the bottom of the fifth.
San Jose State (15-29-1. 8-16-1 MW) did get on the board in its half of the sixth to cut the deficit to 2-1. That marker came on three consecutive two-out singles.
It remained a one-run game until the top of the eighth when Adkison restored SDSU's two-run lead with a solo home run to left. It was the 12th four-bagger of the year for the Aztec junior left fielder.
Trailing by two runs at 3-1, the Spartans would rally to tie the contest in the bottom of the eighth. They had three hits in the frame with the runs scoring on a balk and a wild pitch by the usually reliable CJ Saylor.
Three innings of scoreless ball set the stage for San Diego State to score twice in the top of the 12th with the winning run coming on a two-out double by Calabuig that scored Alan Trejo. Danny Sheehan's ensuing single to shallow center field allowed Calabuig to come home with the insurance run to make it a 5-3 game.
Trejo, who had moved from second base to the mound in the 10th inning, would retire the side after a one-out single in the bottom of the 12th to pick up the win and even his season record at 2-2. The junior right-hander went the final 2.2 innings allowing two singles with no walks and three strikeouts.
Adkison led the Aztec batters with three hits including the home run while four others finished with two hits apiece in the 16-hit attack. Calabuig ended the day with a double, home run, three RBI and a pair of runs scored.
San Diego State and San Jose State will wrap up their weekend series on Sunday, May 7, with a game scheduled to get underway at 1:00 p.m. at Municipal Stadium.
