ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - San Diego State will begin play at the 2017 Mountain West Tournament this afternoon with a contest against Fresno State set to get underway at 3:00 p.m. MT. The tourney is being played at Santa Ana Star Field at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque.
As the No. 2 seed, the Aztecs will be the home team in their contest vs. No. 3 Fresno State this afternoon. The other game on today's schedule will see No. 1 seeded New Mexico face No. 4 seed Nevada at 7:00 p.m. MT.
SDSU (38-18, 20-10 MW) is coming off its regular season-ending series against Fresno State in which it dropped two of three contests to the Bulldogs.
Fresno State is expected to start junior left-hander Ricky Tyler Thomas (6-2, 3.86) on the mound in today's contest. Thomas recorded a win in San Diego last week as he limited SDSU to three hits over 6.2 innings in FSU's 4-0 victory on Thursday, May 18.
The Aztecs will counter with senior left-hander Dominic Purpura (6-3, 3.86).
Outfielder David Hensley continues to lead the SDSU offense with a .381 batting average. His 16 doubles ranks second on the squad this season.
Shortstop Danny Sheehan comes into the day with a .355 average and he is second on the team with 50 RBI and 51 runs scored.
Tyler Adkison continues to provide the power as he tops the Aztecs with 14 home runs, 56 RBI, a .674 slugging percentage and a .458 on-base mark.
San Diego State's next game depends on the result of its contest against Fresno State this afternoon. A win would move the Aztecs into the 7:00 p.m. Friday night game vs. the winner between New Mexico and Nevada. A loss to the Bulldogs would put them in an elimination contest against the loser of that other game at 3:00 p.m. on Friday.
