SAN DIEGO - The NCAA released the Academic Progress Rate (APR) for member institutions today and San Diego State once again easily cleared the threshold by the organization to avoid penalties and set a program record in the process.
All 19 varsity sports (represented by 18 scores as indoor and outdoor track and field receive one score) were at least 25 points higher than the minimum multi-year score of 930 established by the NCAA.
The average APR multi-year program score for San Diego State is 982. That is a five-point improvement over last year's multi-year and is the highest in school history. In addition, women's golf, which is currently competing at NCAA Regionals, and volleyball earned public recognition accolades from the NCAA last week for placing among the top 10 percent in their sport.
"We often talk about this being a golden era in San Diego State athletics and that extends off the competition field and into the classroom," SDSU athletic director John David Wicker said. "Our student-athletes continue to make all of us proud with their achievements as students.
"One of the areas I continue to be most proud of is the work of (senior associate athletic director) Bobby Smitheran and his staff in student-athlete academic support services. Their commitment and support to our student-athletes is unsurpassed and a major component of our classroom success."
Today, the NCAA released information for every school in the country based on the eligibility and retention of each scholarship student-athlete. Scholarship student-athletes each semester receive one point for remaining eligible and one point for staying in school or graduating. Teams scoring below certain thresholds can face consequences, including practice restrictions and playing-season reductions. Rates reflect performance over the past four years, with today's latest multi-year score based on the 2012-13, 2013-14, 2014-15 and 2015-16 academic years.
San Diego State's academic success goes well beyond the NCAA's APR report. Just last month SDSU honored 329 scholar-athletes at its annual banquet for earning a 3.00 cumulative GPA or a 3.20 semester GPA.
