SAN DIEGO - San Diego State water polo's Alyssa Diacono and Caroline Israels were named to the 2017 Golden Coast Conference All-Tournament Team, the league announced Monday morning. It is the second career honor for Diacono and the third for Israels.
Diacono earned a spot on the all-tournament team for the first time since 2015. The center from Ladera Ranch recorded two goals, one assist and one steal, but her impact came from drawing ejections. Diacono drew four vs. Azusa Pacific in the semifinals, two of which led to five-meter penalty shots. Then in the championship game vs. Pacific, she drew three more with two leading to five-meter attempts. All four five-meter chances led to goals.
As for Israels, she adds a 2017 all-tourney award to her mantle that already includes hardware from 2014 and 2016. The utility from Pompano Beach, Florida tallied six goals, three assists and five steals in the Aztecs' two tournament outings. Israels posted a career-high six goals, one assist and five steals to help SDSU defeat Azusa Pacific. The next day, she assisted on two of San Diego State's seven goals vs. Pacific.
The all-tournament selections for the two seniors cap a career that saw them guide the Aztecs to a 26-0 all-time record in Golden Coast Conference games, five GCC championships and an NCAA tournament appearance in 2016.
