Western Intercollegiate Round One Results
PJ Samiere found himself in a tie for ninth place at even par when play was suspended in the second round of the Western Intercollegiate on Saturday in Santa Cruz. The Aztecs were left stranded on holes 12-14 when darkness overcame 6,615-yard, par-70 Pasatiempo Golf Course.
Samiere completed the first 18 holes with a two-under 68. The junior, who started on No. 11, birdied two of the first four holes before closing with birdies on three of his last five. Samiere struggled in the second round as four bogeys overshadowed birdies on Nos. 16 and 18. He sits at even par for the tournament with four more holes to complete.
Trevor Norby posted SDSU's second-best effort before action was postponed. The redshirt freshman from Carlsbad shot two-over in the first round despite recording four birdies. Norby will resume second-round action on Sunday on No. 4 and will finish on the ninth.
Brian Song ended Saturday in a tie for 65th place at plus-9. Three birdies highlighted Song's first 18 holes, but the senior was doomed by five bogeys and two doubles, and he ultimately signed a scorecard that read 77. Song's second round was more of the same despite an even start over his first six holes. When play resumes, he will look to improve upon his 2-over second-round effort.
Blake Abercrombie and Gunn Yang are both tied for 68th place at 10-over par. Abercrombie shot a 78 in the first round, while Yang was one shot better at 77. In the second round, Abercrombie was 1-over on his front nine and at the turn, birdied two straight before finishing his day with a triple bogey. Yang was able to birdie No. 6 before play was called. He will have four more holes to complete on Sunday before beginning final-round action.
Rounding out the San Diego State entry was Nahum Mendoza III, who shot a 76 over the first 18 holes. He currently is in a tie for 76th place with a cumulative score of +11.
As a team, the Aztecs are currently in 12th place at 33-over par. They finished first-round action with a 13-over 370.
San Diego State will complete the second round on Sunday at 8 a.m. PT and will continue on to the final 18 holes of the tournament.
