SAN DIEGO - San Diego State and New Mexico will play the rubber match off their three-game weekend series this afternoon at 1:00 p.m. at Tony Gwynn Stadium. That contest comes after the Aztecs won Friday night's encounter, 4-0, and the Lobos took Saturday's game, 11-6.
UNM's victory yesterday allowed them to improve to 25-18-1 overall and 15-3-1 in Mountain West play. The Lobos now hold a three-game advantage in the loss column over SDSU with 10 league games left before this year's conference tournament.
The loss, meanwhile, dropped San Diego State's season mark to 30-14 on the year. The Aztecs' 14-6 record in the Mountain West puts them solidly in second place, four games ahead of Fresno State.
New Mexico is expected to send left-hander Luis Gonzalez (3-2, 5.11) to the mound to start this afternoon's contest while SDSU will counter with senior right-hander Cody Thompson (1-0, 4.91).
On the offensive front, third baseman/outfielder David Hensley had a pair of hits and two RBI in Saturday's game vs. New Mexico. The junior from San Diego has gone 5-for 11 over the past three games and has taken over the team batting lead with a .368 average.
Senior shortstop Danny Sheehan recorded two doubles on Saturday as he extended his current hitting streak to nine games.
In addition, second baseman Alan Trejo also had two hits in the loss to the Lobos and has gone 6-for-12 this week with four RBI as he has driven in at least one run in every game. The two hits on Saturday extended his hitting streak to six games over which he has gone 11-for-25 (440) with two doubles, four RBI and six runs scored.
Following today's game, the Aztecs will prepare to travel to Los Angeles on Tuesday, May 2, for a game against UCLA slated to start at 6:00 p.m. at the Bruins' Jackie Robinson Stadium.
