SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State rowing team is gearing up to compete in the 2017 Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships this weekend, April 29-30 in Gold River, Calif., just east of Sacramento. The Aztecs will enter four boats in the weekend's events on Lake Natoma, including a varsity eight, second varsity eight, varsity four and novice eight.
The first race, the varsity eight, is scheduled to begin at 8:50 a.m., where the Aztecs will face a slew of familiar faces including the Stanford lightweight crew, Loyola Marymount, conference foe Sacramento State, Saint Mary's, Santa Clara and Seattle University.
At 9:20 a.m., the second varsity eight boat gets on the water to face Stanford lightweight, Sac State, LMU, Saint Mary's and Santa Clara.
SDSU will also participate in heat one of the women's novice eight at 10:20 a.m., and are set to race UCSD, UCSB, Orange Coast College, Humboldt State, Sonoma State and Washington State.
The final Saturday race for the Aztecs is the varsity four at 11:20 a.m. SDSU will face two Sac State four boats and two from Saint Mary's, while Santa Clara will just race a single four boat.
A link to live results will be available both days of the WIRA Championships on GoAztecs.com. Saturday's results will determine lanes for the V8, 2V8 and V4 grand final races, and all teams will advance to the grand finals in the three categories because each race has seven or fewer entries.
