GRAND FORKS, N.D. - San Diego State closer CJ Saylor is among 40 of the sport's top relief pitchers who have been named to the Midseason Watch List for the 13th annual National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Stopper of the Year Award, members of the association announced Wednesday.
Saylor is the lone representative from the Mountain West on the list that features 18 conferences. He is one of 15 to have reached double digits in saves this season.
Saylor (West Covina, Calif. / South Hills HS) has a record of 1-0 this season with 11 saves and a 1.50 earned run average. Opponents are hitting just .188 against the right-hander. He has made 22 relief appearances (24.0 innings) and has allowed only eight walks while striking out 33.
Saylor is one of four Aztecs who currently appear on awards watch list. Danny Sheehan is a candidate for the 2017 Brooks Wallace Shortstop of the Year Award while senior left-handers Brett Seeburger and Dominic Purpura are on the list for National Pitcher of the Year. The College Baseball Hall of Fame presents both of those honors.
San Diego State will resume Mountain West play when it hosts league-leader New Mexico for a three-game series this weekend. That set will start on Friday, April 28, with a contest slated to get underway at 6:00 p.m. at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
