LAS VEGAS, Nev. - San Diego State exploded for season highs in runs and hits as it defeated UNLV, 20-6, Friday night at Earl E. Wilson Stadium in Las Vegas. The Aztecs were in control from start to finish, scoring in each of the first five innings as they improved to 25-11 overall and 12-5 in the Mountain West. Their run total along with their 24 hits in the game were the most they have recorded in any contest this season
SDSU wasted little time in taking a lead that it would hold over the entire course of the contest. An RBI double by Danny Sheehan and run-scoring single by Jordan Verdon gave the visitors a 2-0- lead in the top of the first.
The Rebels (13-24, 7-10 MW) answered with a run in the bottom of the inning, but the Aztecs added four in the second and three in the third to extend their advantage to 9-1.
SDSU left-hander Brett Seeburger cruised through the first two innings, but ran into a rough patch in the bottom of the third when UNLV scored four runs with two outs to close the gap to 9-5. But any thoughts of a comeback by the Rebels were dispelled when the Aztecs scored seven runs in the top of the fourth to take a 16-4 lead.
Those seven runs came on six hits and a walk with the big blow in the inning begin a two-out bases-loaded triple by Dean Nevarez that cleared the bases. Andrew Brown added a two-run home run later in the frame with David Hensley and Alan Trejo adding RBI base hits
UNLV's final run came in its half of the fourth against Seeburger. The senior hurler would go one more inning, finishing his night with five innings pitched during which he surrendered six runs on eight hits with two walks and five strikeouts. The effort earned him the win as he improved to 7-1 on the season.
Three SDSU pitchers shut the Rebels down over the final four innings, allowing no runs on two hits with no walks and three strikeouts. That trio included Ray Lambert (1 innings), Marcus Reyes (2 innings) and Tre Brown (1 inning).
Trejo (double, 4 RBI, 3 runs scored) and Verdon (double, RBI, run scored) ended the evening with four hits apiece. Hensley (3 runs scored), who had a double and solo home runs among his three hits, contributed five RBI in the contest while Brown (double, home run, two runs scored) drive in four runs.
San Diego State and UNLV will conclude their weekend series on Saturday (April 15) when they square off in a contest scheduled to get underway at 2:05 p.m. in Las Vegas.
