WHAT'S ON TAP THIS WEEK IN AZTEC BASEBALL
Following Tuesday's 5-4 win over UCLA, San Diego State will resume Mountain West action when it hosts a three-game series vs. Nevada this weekend. The opening game of that set is scheduled for Friday, April 7, at 6:00 p.m. at Tony Gwynn Stadium. The Aztecs and Wolf Pack will also meet up for games on Saturday (April 8) and Sunday (April 9) at 2:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. PT respectively.
AZTECS ON THE AIR
All three games of the Nevada series will have live video streaming on The Mountain Digital Network and may also be heard on ESPN 1700 AM in San Diego. In addition, live stats will also be available for all three contests this weekend. Links for the broadcasts as well as live stats will be on the SDSU web site (GoAztecs.com).
TREJO STREAK ENDS
Second baseman Alan Trejo had his 18-game hitting streak end in Sunday's (April 2) game vs. San Jose State. During that streak he hit .311 (28-for-90) with six doubles, three home runs, 11 RBI and 19 runs scored. He hit safely in each of the next two games, going 3-for-8 with a double, two RBI sand a run scored. His double in the sixth inning vs. UCLA on Tuesday drove home the tying and winning runs in the Aztecs' 5-4 victory over the Bruins.
BROWN STAYS CONSISTENT
Third baseman Andrew Brown continues to be one of the Aztecs' most consistent offensive players. Over the past 13 games he is hitting .393 (22-for-56) with a double, triple, 12 RBI and 10 runs scored. He is on an eight-game hitting streak, one game longer that the streak he had earlier in the season. During this streak he is 13-for-34 (.382) with a double, triple, nine RBI and four runs scored.
ADKISON MAKES HIS MARK
Outfielder Tyler Adkison has been named a second team Perfect Game/Rawlings Midseason All-American. He was one of the hottest hitters in the nation over a 10-game span from March 11-26. In those 10 contests, he batted .649 (24-for-37) with four doubles, a triple, six home runs, 23 RBI and 16 runs scored. His slugging percentage over that span in 1.297 and he had a .723 on-base mark in those games.
ERICKSON PROVIDES RELIEF
Junior left-hander Jacob Erickson has been impressive out of the bullpen this season. In his last 15 appearances covering 22 innings, he has allowed one run on 17 hits with eight strikeouts. In the process, he has lowered his earned run average to 1.35. He picked up his fourth win of the year on Sunday (April 2) vs. San Jose State.
NEVAREZ GOES DEEP
Catcher Dean Nevarez is 10-or-28 (.357) over SDSU's last 10 games with a double, home run, two RBI sand two runs scored. He saw a season best four-game hitting streak end in the series finale at Fresno State on March 26. Over those four games he went 7-for-12 (.583) with two doubles, two a home run and four RBI.
CALABUIG HEATING UP
Outfielder Chase Calabuig is hitting .333 (13-for-39) over SDSU's last 12 contests with four doubles, two triples,a home run, eight RBI and nine runs scored. He has a .615 slugging percentage over those 12 games.
SAYLOR STANDS TALL ON THE MOUND
Senior right-hander CJ Saylor has recorded eight saves along with a win this season as the Aztecs' closer. His latest save came on Tuesday when he pitched the final inning, striking out the side, in the 5-4 win over UCLA. He had recorded a save the previous day (April 3) when he tossed a perfect ninth inning in SDSU's 4-2 win vs. San Francisco.
PITCHING DOMINATES
Over the past 11 games, the SDSU pitching staff has posted a 9-2 record with a 2.77 earned run average. Opponents have hit .256 over those 11 contests. Included in that run are a shutout victory and three one-run wins.
AZTEC NOTES
After opening the season with a 3-4 record, San Diego State is 18-5 in its last 23 contests … SDSU enters the series vs. Nevada on its third five-game win streak of the season, it's longest of 2017 … Over the last 14 contests, the Aztecs are hitting .323 to .254 by opponent. They also have a team ERA of 2.97 while opponents' ERA is 6.48 … The Aztecs are 17-0 when leading after six innings, 19-1 when leading after seven and 21-0 when leading after eight … SDSU has committed 23 errors in its first 30 contests for a .980 fielding percentage. The team record for fielding percentage in a season is .978 set during the 2013 campaign … Logan Boyer has allowed no runs on just two hits with 11 strikeouts over his last eight relief appearances (10.1 innings). He tossed a perfect sixth innings picked up his first win in the victory against UCLA on Tuesday (April 4) … Tyler Adkison is hitting .481 (13-for-27) with runners in scoring position while Andrew Brown's average in that situation is .459 (17-for-37) … Junior David Hensley's 16 career sacrifice bunts tie him for 20th on the SDSU career top 20 in that category … Sophomore Jordan Verdon's 11 career sacrifice flies tie him for 12th on the SDSU career top 20 list … Brett Seeburger's 2.60 earned run average leads the conference this week …Julian Escobedo has reached safely in each of his last three plate appearances over two games. He was 1-for-1 and scored a run vs. San Francisco on Monday (April 3), then had a hit and walk with two runs scored against UCLA on Tuesday (April 4).
