SAN DIEGO - Juan Pablo Favero on Monday became the third assistant coach under San Diego State head coach Mike Friesen to be chosen to lead a Division I soccer program. The former fifth-year associate head coach/recruiting coordinator is now the women's soccer head coach at Oakland.

"While I am sad to see JuanPa leave us, I am equally thrilled for him and his family as they embark on this new journey at Oakland," SDSU head coach Mike Friesen said. "He and his family have been important pieces to the Aztec Soccer family and we will miss them dearly.

"I have really enjoyed having JuanPa here, both personally and professionally," Friesen added. "We have had some great moments over the past five seasons. I have no doubt that he will succeed as Oakland's new head coach."

During his time on The Mesa, Favero was a part of a coaching staff that guided the Aztecs to three NCAA tournament appearances, including a Sweet 16 appearance in 2012. At the Mountain West level, San Diego State won seven conference championships, which includes four straight regular-season crowns (2012-15) and three consecutive tournament titles (2012-14). Over Favero's five-year stay, SDSU posted a 74-25-10 record (41-6-3).

"I am filled with different emotions as I take on this new challenge in my career," Favero said. "There is the excitement about the new opportunity, but also sadness in leaving what has been not just a job, but our home. Mostly, I am filled with gratitude for my experience at San Diego State.

"I am thankful for every administrator, coach, staff member, and the student-athletes I have gotten to work alongside as an Aztec. Most of all, I would like to thank Mike Friesen for affording me the opportunity to come to SDSU and every Aztec player I had the privilege to build a relationship with the past five years. It has been an extremely fun and rewarding experience and I have gained so much personally and professionally. SDSU will always be special to me and my family and I will count myself as an Aztec for Life."
