Junior Alexandra Caplan opened the 2017 Zone E Diving Championships by placing sixth of 54 competitors on the 3-meter springboard Monday afternoon at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Ariz. She is one of four Aztec divers competing at the meet, which will determine qualifiers for next week's NCAA Championships in Indianapolis, Ind.

Caplan placed fourth in the prelims with a score of 316.80 to become one of 18 athletes to advance to the final round. Her mark of 290.10 over her six dives in the finals gave her a total of 606.90 on the day, good for a sixth-place finish as she was the lone Aztec to advance out of the prelims.

The winner on the 3-meter springboard was Maria Polyakova of UCLA, whose point total of 756.65 was enough to win the event by over 19 points.

San Diego State's other competitors included freshman Marie Yacopino (272.45 - 20th) along with juniors Nicole Dutton (255.60 - 29th) and Payton Gabris (209.10 - 51st).

Action at the Zone E Championships continues on Tuesday (March 7) with competition on the 1-meter springboard with prelims set to get underway at 11:00 a.m. MT followed by the finals at 2:35 p.m. MT.
