SDSU 8, Boston Univ. 0 (5 inn.) | Tourney Page

Sydnee Cable (Huntington Beach, Calif.) hit a grand slam and drove in a career-high six runs, and Erica Romero (Corona, Calif.) tossed a five-hit shutout to lead San Diego State to an 8-0, five-inning victory over Boston University Friday night at SDSU Softball Stadium.

Cable also added a two-run double for the Aztecs (9-7) and has nine RBIs in three games this weekend at the San Diego Classic I.

SDSU loaded the bases in the bottom of the first inning before Cable took a 1-2 pitch over the right-field wall. It was the senior's first home run of the season and first grand slam of her career.

San Diego State added to its lead in the third when sophomore Katie Byrd (Santee, Calif./West Hills HS) led off with a single and moved to second on a four-pitch walk to junior Jenavee Peres (Garden Grove, Calif.). Both runners moved up a base, Byrd on a wild pitch and Peres on a foulout, and, after a strikeout, Cable ripped a double to left-center field to put the Aztecs up, 6-0.

SDSU tacked on a run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Byrd, which scored senior Jaylene Ignacio (Oceanside, Calif./El Camino HS).

The Terriers (5-6) threatened in the top of the fifth, loading the bases with no outs on three consecutive singles. Romero (3-1), however, got Emma Wong to ground into a fielder's choice, which got the lead runner at home, and then struck out Alex Heinen swinging and struck out Gabi Martinez looking to keep her shutout intact.

In the bottom of the fifth, San Diego State junior Taylor Stewart (Bellflower, Calif.) led off with a walk and was replaced by sophomore Aris Metcalfe (Compton, Calif.). Cable hit a ball deep in the hole between first and second base, which allowed Metcalfe to race to third. Freshman Shelby Thompson (Benicia, Calif.) then singled through the right side to plate Metcalfe and secure the run-rule win for the Aztecs.

In a game that didn't start until 1 hour and 44 minutes after its original start time (7 p.m. PT) because of the preceding games in the tournament, SDSU had six hits and walked five times in the win.

Cable's six RBIs were two more than her previous high of four, tied with Peres for the most by a San Diego State player this season and tied for the second most in a game in program history.

Byrd was 2-for-2 with an RBI, run and sac fly, while Peres had two runs, two stolen bases and a walk.

The offense was plenty for Romero. The right-hander allowed five hits and two walks over five innings, while striking out a season-high six batters. It was the seventh shutout of her career.

The Aztecs return to action at 6 p.m. PT Saturday against Miami University, while SDSU Softball Stadium's games begin at 10:30 a.m. PT.
