HONOLULU - T-No. 12 San Diego State dropped its first game of the Hawai'i Invitational, falling to third-ranked UCLA, 22-5, Thursday night at Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex. The loss snapped the Aztecs' two-game winning streak and lowered their record to 13-10 on the year.
SDSU dug itself a big hole to start the game as UCLA (15-1) posted seven first-quarter goals and scored the first eight goals of the night. Caroline Israels put a halt to the Bruins' attack with her lone goal as the clock dipped under 7:00. Alyssa Diacono, meanwhile, added another goal in the frame, but the Bruins enjoyed a 13-2 lead at halftime.
The Aztecs settled down in the third quarter and the results were the most positive of the night. San Diego State kept UCLA off the scoreboard for the first 2:40 of the period until Bronte Halligan found the back of the net. Lizzy Bilz answered 50 seconds later to make it a 14-3 game. The Bruins, however, scored twice in less than two minutes, but were held scoreless for the final 2:42 of the frame. Hannah Carrillo, meanwhile, netted a power-play goal with 40 seconds left to trim SDSU's deficit to 16-4.
The final eight minutes were the opposite of the eight third-quarter minutes as the Bruins scored six more times. The Aztecs were only able to muster another Carrillo goal with 1:10 left in the game.
SDSU returns to action on Friday when it faces T-No. 12 UC Santa Barbara at 7:15 p.m. HT (10:15 p.m. PT) in Honolulu.
