After last night's game was postponed due to rain, San Diego State will open a three-game series at Fresno State this afternoon with a doubleheader scheduled to get underway at 6:05 p.m. PT at FSU's Pete Beiden Field.
Both the Aztecs (14-7) and Bulldogs (12-8) come into tonight's contest with Mountain West records of 4-2, tied for second place in the league standings behind New Mexico (6-0). The winner of this weekend's three-game set will find itself at least tied for second place depending on the results in other conference contests.
SDSU's record against Fresno State stands at 93-94 over the years with the Bulldogs being the team that the Aztecs have faced the most in the sport of baseball. Last season the Bulldogs captured four of the six games against the Aztecs, winning twice in Fresno and two times in San Diego.
The Bulldogs are led offensively by left fielder Jared Akins (.389, 10 2B, 11 RBI), first baseman Aaron Arruda (.376, 3 HR, 19 RBI) and designated hitter Zach Ashford (.366, 2 3B, 6 RBI). Fresno State is hitting .303 as a team with a 4.67 earned run average.
FSU will start lefty Ricky Tyler Thomas (2-1, 3.06) on the mound for game one and go with right-hander Ricky Ramirez (2-2, 5.23) in the nightcap.
San Diego State will open with left-hander Brett Seeburger (3-1, 3.30) and turn to another lefty, Dominic Purpura (4-0, 3.90) in the second contest.
After opening the season with a 3-4 record, San Diego State is 11-3 in its last 14 contests. Over the last 10 contests, the Aztecs are hitting .327 to .265 by opponent. They also have a team ERA of 2.94 while opponents' ERA is 6.09.
Second baseman Alan Trejo is currently on a 12-game hitting streak during which he is batting .351 (20-for-57) with four doubles, three home runs, 10 RBI and 14 runs scored. He has scored at least once in each of SDSU's last eight contests and 11 of the last 12.
Third baseman Andrew Brown continues to be one of the Aztecs' most consistent hitters. He has hit safely in eight of SDSU's last nine contests, going 18-for-43 (.419) with three doubles, seven RBI and nine runs scored. Brown has driven in at least one run in six of the last eight contests.
Outfielder Tyler Adkison is hitting .595 (22-for-37) over SDSU's last 11 games with four doubles, a triple, six home runs, 22 RBI and 13 runs scored. His slugging percentage over that span in 1.243 and he has a .674 on-base mark in those games.
San Diego State and Fresno State will wrap up their weekend series on Sunday (March 26) with a game slated to begin at 1:05 p.m. PT in Fresno.
