SAN DIEGO - San Diego State opens a three-game conference series against UNLV this evening at 6:00 p.m. at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
UNLV enters the weekend with a record of 9-9 overall and 4-2 in the Mountain West. The Rebels spilt a pair of contests vs. Grand Canyon mid-week after sweeping three games from Air Force in Las Vegas last weekend.
The Rebels are led offensively by shortstop Bryson Stott (.425, 3 2B, 12 RBI), second baseman Justin Jones (.379, 4 HR, 22 RBI) and left fielder Ernie De La Trinidad (.373, 2 HR, 8 RBI). UNLV is hitting .317 as a team with a 4.85 earned run average.
The Rebels are expected to start right-hander Alan Strong (2-0, 3.44) on the mound tonight. He will be opposed by SDSU senior lefty Brett Seeburger (3-0, 2.35).
SDSU comes into this evening's contest with an overall record of 11-6. Its 2-1 Mountain West mark puts it in a three-way tie for second place in the league standings entering the weekend.
Outfielder Tyler Adkison followed up last week's impressive string of games by going 3-for-4 in the win at USD on Tuesday (March 14) with a home run, RBI and two runs scored. In four games last week, Adkison hit .538 (7-for-13) with six RBI and three runs scored.
Second baseman Alan Trejo led off the contest at USD on Tuesday with a home run on the first pitch of the game. It was the first time SDSU opened the game with a homer by the leadoff batter since Justin Wylie did it last season at Cal State Fullerton (March 15). Trejo is currently on an eight-game hitting streak during which he has gone 14-for-37 (.378) with three doubles, two home runs, seven RBI and eight runs scored.
First baseman Jordan Verdon had three hits including a home run in the win at USD on Tuesday (March 14). The sophomore has five career home runs as an Aztec with two of those coming at USD's Fowler Park. He has gone 6-for-17 in the past four contests with a homer, four RBI and three runs scored.
San Diego State and UNLV will continues their weekend series with a contest on Saturday (March 18) scheduled to get underway at 1:00 p.m. PT at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
